Seventy
Weeks of Daniel
There
have been volumes written on these four verses of Holy Scripture. These verses
detail God’s plan for Israel from the time that Israel was captive in Babylon
until the return of the Messiah Jesus. Many notables have discussed their
theories and through the ages there has been some confusion on this subject. I
confess in times past I have subscribed to some of the teachings of others
however, I have pushed all the books away since I have noticed that some lacked
conviction in their subject matter and I sought the Lord Jesus and the guidance
of his Holy Spirit. The plan of the Lord Jesus is far above the ability of the
intellect of man to comprehend on his own. The only way to understand is by the
revelation of the Holy Spirit. I suggest you pray and join me in what I consider
to be the most revealing (Glory to God) text on this subject.
Daniel
9:24
|
Seventy
weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish
the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make
reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness,
and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. |
In this declaration by the angel Gabriel he reveals seven things that will be accomplished through the Jewish people and Jerusalem during these seventy weeks. Below are listed the fulfillment of these declarations:
Finish
the transgression:
This declaration is to bring to completion or to bring the fullness of
transgression. Jesus said speaking of the end time how that iniquity would
abound. The fullness of transgression will abound in the midst of the Jewish
nation and the holy city Jerusalem.
“But
when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the
prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then
let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: And let him that is on the
housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing
out of his house: And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to
take up his garment. But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give
suck in those days! And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. For in
those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the
creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. And except that the
Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's
sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.” (Mark 13:14-20)
“But
woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!
for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people” (Luke
21:23)
When
the image of the antichrist is placed in the temple in Jerusalem the fullness of
transgression has come. The Jewish nation has rejected Jesus the promised
Messiah for more than two thousand years and to finish the transgression
Israel receives another as the Messiah.
“I
am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his
own name, him ye will receive.” (John 5:43)
“And
another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with
a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle,
and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully
ripe.” (Rev. 14:18)
The
fullness of transgression arrives.
Make
an end of sins:
Since the fullness of transgression has
come now it is time to make an end of sins. The armies of the earth have been
gathered to the battle of the great day of God Almighty. Antichrist and his
hordes have already trodden down the great city Jerusalem for 42 months,
murdered God’s faithful and deceived the earth. Now it is time to pay the
piper for their vile acts. The six of seven angels have poured out their vials
of judgment on the earth and now it’s time for the last vial to be poured,
which is poured into the air. A judgment from the air. (Rev. 16:17)
“And
I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was
called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His
eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a
name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a
vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies
which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen,
white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it
he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he
treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath
on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF
LORDS.” (Rev. 19:11-16)
This
is the judgment of the air and the end of sins personally by the Lion of
the tribe of Judah, the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
Paul
said, “For the word of God
is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing
even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,
and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
I bring this up simply to show you an interesting account of this very event in Isaiah: “Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire.” (Isaiah 30:27) Also “And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod” (Isaiah 30:30-31) “As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it” (Isaiah 31:5)
This deserves repeating, in Revelations we see:
“And
I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him
was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a
name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a
vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies
which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen,
white and clean”
“And
there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the
weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail;
for the plague thereof was exceeding great” (Rev. 16:21)
These are the details of the judgment from the air. Remember back in the day of Isaiah the angel of the Lord went and destroyed the Assyrian army but this account is different. I’m sure when the armies of antichrist see the Lord Jesus return with the “Raptured” saints his army, they look like “Birds flying” a judgment from the air and an end of sins. Never again will God’s dwelling be subject to the sinful acts of man.
Reconciliation
for iniquity:
When Jesus was crucified sin was
reconciled to God. By receiving Jesus as savior this reconciliation for
iniquity is accounted to our lives. Since Jesus came into the world through
the tribe of Judah he is included in the blanket statement of Gabriel as to what
declarations will be accomplished through “Thy people”. “For
if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his
Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Romans 5:10)
Bring
in everlasting righteousness:
“And
the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The
kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ;
and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (Rev. 11:15) When Jesus establishes the
Kingdom of God on earth this is the bringing in of everlasting righteousness.
To
seal up the vision and prophecy: “But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin
to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his
servants the prophets” (Rev. 10:7) The establishment of the Kingdom of God on
earth has been the theme of the bible from Genesis to Revelation. This is the
kingdom that the Jews had so eagerly awaited for from the beginning. “And
he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed
be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in
earth.” (Luke 11:12) “And Enoch
also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord
cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all.” (Jude
1:14-15)
To
anoint the most Holy: Jesus
the Most Holy anointed from birth of the Holy Spirit. “For unto
you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord”
(Luke 2:11) “And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the
temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them
questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and
answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him,
Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee
sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that
I must be about my Father's business?” (Luke 2:46-49)
After he was risen from the dead Jesus declares his victory, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18) Here is the anointing or Coronation of the Most Holy as King of kings and Lord of lords.
Daniel
9:25 |
Know
therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment
to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be
seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built
again, and the wall, even in troublous times. |
Daniel
9:26 |
And
after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the
city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and
unto the end of the war desolations are determined. |
Gabriel divides the seventy-week timeframe into parts. The
first two parts discussed are seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. These weeks
represent years of time (one week= 7 years).
I am convinced that the people who study prophecy incorrectly try to lump
these two time frames into one larger timeframe coming up with a number of
sixty-nine weeks of years. If the number were to be considered as one larger
period of time, it would have more than likely been written in the form of nine
and threescore weeks. The fact that there is a noted difference distinguishing a
seven-week period and a sixty-two week period suggests two events.
The revelation of Gabriel in Daniel 9:25 is almost a riddle;
mentioning the seven weeks first however what Gabriel says is very interesting,
he says from the time of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem
shall be sixty-two weeks and seven weeks and in fact two rebuilding programs
occur in these timeframes. At the end of the sixty-two weeks of time the Messiah
would also be killed (Cut off)
Picture a stopwatch with seventy weeks of total time and an
egg timer that ticks off 62 weeks of time (434 years) both the stopwatch and the
egg timer start at the same time. The sixty-two week egg timer as it nears
it’s completion it comes upon the last seven-weeks of that timeframe (49
years), the 49 year unit of time is part of the sixty-two weeks mentioned. Both
units of time came to glorious conclusion simultaneously.
Artaxerxes II reigned as King of Persia according to the
historical record from 404-358 BC although the biblical record proves that his
reign had to begin in 421 BC. When attempting to zero in on exact dates the
ancient Persian historical record is foggy at best, especially when attempting
to construct a timeline of history using the limited broken tidbits of Persian
historical record as its foundation whereas the biblical timeframe is specific.
Recorded in Nehemiah 2:17 the Bible declares that Artaxerxes II in his twentieth
year gives the decree to build the city of Jerusalem being the reference point
that Gabriel sited, starting both the stopwatch and egg timer. As time winds
down the egg timer comes upon its last seven weeks (49 years) at this point King
Herod begins a restoration program of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Gospel of
John 2:20 states that the Temple was 46 years in building at the time Jesus
began his ministry, his ministry was a period of three years in length
concluding with the crucifixion and thereby completing the seven week and
sixty-two week periods as declared by the angel Gabriel. The literal translation
of Gabriel’s statement brings clarity to the matter of the seven-week period:
Know therefore and understand,
that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build the covenant
of peace unto the consecration of the anointed one, the Prince shall
be seven weeks (49 years), and threescore and two weeks (434 years): the street
shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
Like a timer within a timer, two physical restorations
concluding with the spiritual foundation of restoration fulfill both time
periods and are within the sixty-two weeks mentioned by the angel Gabriel. As
previously mentioned the first construction of the city and temple endured
troublous times of war and interruption and although the second restoration was
ongoing at the time of Christ, the Jews completed wall of Jerusalem during the
troublous time of civil insurrection just before its destruction by the Romans.
Both restorations are in complete agreement with the angel’s declaration.
The seven-week period signaled the building of the eternal
covenant of peace for all those who have accepted Jesus as their savior. The
rejection of Jesus as the Messiah by Israel caused the stopwatch that keeps the
total of seventy-weeks concerning the tasks and purposes to be accomplished
through the Jewish people to come to a standstill leaving eight weeks of time
(56 years) left on God’s stopwatch. From that moment clear through the present
day Jesus has primarily used the Gentile nations to preach his Gospel to the
world. Gabriel says that seventy weeks are determined upon the holy people and
upon the Holy City. When the Israelis were reestablished as a nation and
then recaptured the holy city of Jerusalem in 1967 the last eight weeks began
ticking off the clock. When the new Jewish Temple is built and then dedicated
according to the Mosaic precept, man will have stepped across the threshold of
the last ten years of his existence. It is possible that the Temple could be
built and stand there a few years before being dedicated however in my opinion
that scenario is unlikely considering the religious zeal of Orthodox Judaism. In
any case the dedication of the Temple is the signal mechanism for a 940Day
countdown to the beginning of the seventieth and last week promised to Israel
and the world, as we know it.
Daniel
9:27 |
And
he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst
of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and
for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even
until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
desolate. |
And
he shall confirm the covenant
with many for one week:
According to any book I have ever read on this subject, all of them have claimed that the “He” in this verse is speaking of antichrist. It has been taught that antichrist makes a seven-year pact with Israel allowing them to build their Temple and in the middle of the seven years, he breaks his agreement, placing his image in the Temple and ushers in the judgment of God Almighty. This conclusion is a mistake. Lets take a close look at this verse.
To confirm a covenant is to establish the certainty or validity of the covenant already in existence. So, the conclusion of a seven-year agreement between Israel and antichrist on this basis alone is a mistake. This covenant already exists and the validity of this covenant is confirmed with many for one week, the seventieth and last week promised to Israel. Again, this covenant is not something that comes into existence during the last week but rather already exists.
“Behold,
the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that
I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them
out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an
husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will
make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my
law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God,
and they shall be my people” – (Jeremiah 31: 31-33)
“For
finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I
will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of
Judah” (Hebrews 8:8)
“And
he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye
all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament (Covenant), which is
shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:27-28)
This is the
covenant already in existence that “He”, the Lord Jesus will confirm with
many for one week. When
Gabriel says, He will confirm the covenant with many for one week, he is
speaking of the blood bought covenant of Jesus Christ. Remember, this is the
last week that God appointed to the Jewish nation. After the Rapture of the
church God appoints Israel as his ministering tool to preach the Gospel to the
world through his 144,000 anointed Jews. The book of Revelation spells this out
clearly. Revelation chapter seven shows 12,000 Jews from each tribe being sealed
with the seal of God Almighty. This seal is the baptism of the Holy Ghost which only
Jesus can give. These are sealed while the antichrist goes forth conquering
the world and the holy land. (Rev. 7:1-17) The temple is already built
signifying that the beginning of the last week promised to Israel is near.
How
is God going to reach these 144,000 Jews? We read in Revelation 11:3-7 how Jesus
gives power to his two witnesses and they prophecy for 3-1/2 years
“And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a
thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the
two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth
their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophecy:
and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with
all plagues, as often as they will. And when they shall have finished their
testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war
against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.” These two wittnesses
are clothed in “Sackcloth” which means they are mourning as those who in the
days of the old covenant law would be in mourning for sin and trespass. They are
mourning for “Stiff Necked” Israel because they still reject the Messiah
Jesus. The confirming final week
starts when the first of the 144,000 Jews receives the true Messiah “Jesus
Christ” being sealed with the seal of God, this seal is the baptism of the
Holy Spirit and a result of the testimony of these two prophets.
“And
I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty
and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. And I
heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a
great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And
they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts,
and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and
four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not
defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb
whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the
firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for
they are without fault before the throne of God” (Rev. 14: 1-5) The only way
you can be without fault before God is to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior
thereby having your sins blotted out of God’s memory forever.
“I
will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah
31:34)
In
turn, these 144,000 preach the everlasting Gospel to the world resulting in a
worldwide conversion.
“After
this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all
nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and
before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried
with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9-10) Palms symbolize victory and great Joy,
although this victory is gained through the laying down of their lives for their
testimony of Jesus as Lord. The white robes are the robes of
righteousness, which can only be had by receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior. This
is the sum of what Gabriel is speaking of when he says, “He shall confirm
the covenant with many for one week”
Now
we need to back up and discuss the Temple in Jerusalem. The Law of Moses will be
the law of the land. That’s why Jesus told his disciples that when you see the
abomination of desolation and warned them to flee to the mountains he said pray
that your flight be not in winter or on the Sabbath, since on the Sabbath you
can’t do any servile work so transportation won’t be available, purchasing
gasoline for their cars will not be possible and so on.
I
realize that many who speak on prophecy have said that the temple will be built
during the tribulation however I believe it is before. The key to this is found
in Daniel 8:13-14
“Then I heard one saint
speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long
shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice (beginning), and the transgression
of desolation (end), to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden
under foot?”
“And
he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then (After)
shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”
These
twenty-three hundred days are actual days, an exact time frame. The actual
original words that translate into the word “Days” actually are the words
“ Ereb” and “Boqer” meaning Evening and Morning”
equaling a “Day”. This is further confirmed by the angel to Daniel when he
is told in the same chapter in the twenty-sixth verse: “And the vision of the
evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the
vision; for it shall be for many days”
Since
this number stands for actual days, this number translates to 6.38 biblical
years. (It really doesn’t matter what Calendar you subscribe to since God knew
we would be using a yearly calendar other than the biblical 360 day format.)
This is why the time frame was quoted in days. So, from the moment of the
sacrificial dedication of the temple (the first animal sacrifice) till the
moment that the image of antichrist is placed in the temple (Abomination of
Desolation) will be 2300 days or 6.38 years. Since the angel says in Daniel 9:27
that in the middle of the seventieth week (3-1/2 years) is when the abomination
of Desolation occurs we then can conclude that the temple must be built prior to
the tribulation. This timeframe will
include most of the testimony of the two prophets of God howbeit their testimony
won’t begin until after the animal sacrifice of dedication upon the Alter is
accomplished. The
two witnesses will finish their testimony and be killed on the orders of the
antichrist about 7-8 months into his reign. The world celebrates their death and
the bodies of these prophets are not even put
in graves, but lay in the streets of Jerusalem for 3-1/2 days. Then God raises
them from the dead, they stand upright on their feet, and they ascend into
heaven with their enemies watching them go.
I
believe that the two anointed ones will be the apostle John and Moses. John is
told the he must Prophecy again “And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again
before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings” (Rev. 10:11)
Moses
was the one who revealed to the children of Israel that God would raise up a
Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall
hearken and God said, “I
will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will
put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command
him. And it shall come to pass,
that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I
will require it of him” (Deuteronomy 18:18-19)
In my mind, it
makes perfect sense for Moses to be testifying against this reconstituted
institution of the old covenant law.
Moses was the one that had power over the waters to turn them to blood in Egypt.
I know some have said that one of those prophets will be Elijah because it
doesn’t rain during their testimony and it is possible however, it just seems
that Moses would be the more appropriate choice.
Here
we see a progression first the temple is built and dedicated with a blood
sacrifice showing the return of Mosaic law in Israel. (The Rapture of the church
takes place either before the temple is built or soon after but most likely
before since in fact Jesus said, "Therefore
be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."
(Matthew 24:44) I believe that if we were to see the temple built all our eyes
would be or should be skyward in expectation.) We then see for the first
time in two thousand years true Prophets of God in Israel that have authority to
unleash on the earth whatever plagues they wish. Next there is the
conversion of 144,000 Jewish evangelists.
We have already discovered that the ritual practices of the Old Testament will be in full operation in these last days. The fact that they are in force as the law of the land demonstrates that the nation is still awaiting their promised Messiah. Although Jesus has for the first time in two thousand years raised up true prophets of God among the Jews and they testify in power daily in the streets of Jerusalem and more than likely in the temple on temple mount, the Religious leaders still reject the truth, as does most of the nation and the world. It is the same attitude that Israel had when Jesus walked among them two thousand years before. The reward for this rejection is that God allows the nation to receive another as Messiah, the Antichrist. The fatal abomination is the rejection of Jesus and this rejection is declared worldwide when antichrist takes seat on the Holy of Holies in the Temple. This is the Abomination that causes Desolation.
When
Gabriel explained to Daniel, “He
shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease” he was saying that Jesus
will allow Israel and the world to receive the antichrist as the god of the
earth. Yes, antichrist is the
mechanism by which this is accomplished but, it is Jesus who looses the seals of
judgment. Jesus is in control. The
apostle Paul sums this up beautifully in 2nd Thessaloanians chapter
2:7-11:
“For
the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he (Holy Spirit) who now letteth
will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be
revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the Spirit of his mouth, and shall
destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the
working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received
not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause
God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in
unrighteousness”
And for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate:
Since the sin of man has reached it’s fullness and Jesus has preached his Gospel of the Kingdom through his chosen, yet the majority of mankind has chosen to reject his mercy, Jesus simply lets go of the reins giving man over to his own corruptible nature. This abomination of desolation catapults the Judgments of God on the Christ rejecting world and heralds the return of Jesus to establish his Kingdom on earth. In fact, the judgments are the final and most grievous birth pains of the coming Kingdom of God on earth. Just like a woman in labor, the birth is kind of messy and extremely painful however, after that a Joyful celebration for all those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior, a kingdom without end. Hallelujah.
I
hope that this teaching blessed you as it has blessed me.
Lord Jesus, Open the understanding of your people! Amen
