West End Bar & Cafe Reviews

Home

Please note that there are no actual gay bars in the West End, but given the nature of the area there are always likely to be at least a few gay people in most bars and cafes.

BONHAMS 192 Byres Rd 0141 357 3424

Bit of an '80s wine bar feel to this place, but a camp favourite, with a stained-glass depiction of 'The Yellow Brick Road' above the entrance. Split over two levels, Bonhams offers reasonable value food, a pleasant atmosphere and a cheerful greeting.

THE UBIQUITOUS CHIP 12 Ashton Lane 0141 334 5007

"The Chip", as this bar is affectionately known, has been a West End favourite for eons. It is the place to be to mingle with Glasgow based MSPs and MPs, media darlings from the BBC, and all the other A-grade West End peeps. The restaurant offers high-price, high-quality meals, all based on the finest Scottish fayre, while the bar offers the most cosmopolitan range of people you're ever likely to see.
It's fabulous, sweetie dahling!

CURLERS 256 Byres Rd 0141 338 6511

Studenty dive, so lots of fresh meat on view. Cheap drinks for all, even cheaper with a matric card, so a good place to start a night out, what with a taxi-rank right outside and the Underground next door. Always a few homos gracing the joint, but as with most student joints, there is a lot of ambiguity about the clientele - boy, girl, gay, straight? Get them pissed enough to experiment....!

TENNENTS 191 Byres Rd 0141 341 1024

Ex-gay bar, still frequented by a few old queens. Reasonable pub-grub, reasonable price - it's an all round reasonable place. geared towards the older crowd. Still, if you're a young 'un looking for adventure, enter the portals and take your chance.

BAR BREL 37-43 Ashton Lane 0141 342 4966

Über-trendy Belgian-esque joint, serving that old Belgo-fave, moûles et frites. Quite pricey, and with very bare decor, it should appeal to all you rustic minimalists. Excellent conservatory/garden area out back (ideal for cruising passing students!), its a nice place to while away a sunny afternoon. With an extremely nice clientele, you could even be in with the chance of a pull!

CUL DE SAC 44 Ashton Lane 0141 334 8899

Full of under-agers from the local schools, chicken-lovers will rejoice. Predominantly straight, up-for-it crowd, the bar has various nights, a regular DJ set, and a fairly groovy cafe/restaurant. With all this crammed into three fairly small levels it's worth a look but not worth staying for long. Unofficial dress code in operation. Boys should wear good trews and a shirt. For girls, only Morgan or Kookaï will do.

JINTY McGINTYS 23 Ashton Lane 0141 339 0747

Quintessential Irish pub, with regular live music sets and gallons of Guinness! Very friendly atmosphere and a good crowd, you can be guaranteed a warm welcome. Not the highest gay count ever, but who cares! Lots of horny Irish accents to lust after, and Irish eyes may well smile on you...

TINDERBOX 189 Byres Rd 0141 339 3108

Practically 100% gay coffee bar, with extremely modern and trendy chrome fittings, a fine array of beverages, some food and cakes, seemingly endless staff changes and funky mopeds in the window. All the hip West Enders hang out here, so if you're out of town, and want to fit in, shimmy on in here and watch the Byres Road society go about their business.
