These are a little bit lightweight, in my humble opinion. But I reckon they'll qualify from this group.

19th June 2000

Sweden, perfect in dress rehearsals for Euro 2000, bumbled for the third successive game Monday, going out of the competition after a 2-1 defeat by group B winner Italy.

An 88th-minute goal from Alessandro del Piero destroyed Sweden's slim chances of taking the second spot in the group after striker Henrik Larsson gave it brief hope in the second half with an excellent individual effort that canceled out a first-half headed goal from Luigi di Biagio.

Sweden dominated its qualifying group, winning seven of eight games and drawing the other. But when it got to Euro 2000, it seemed to lose the plot, going down 2-1 in the opening match against Belgium and drawing the second with Turkey 0-0.

It needed Turkey to beat Belgium Monday to have a chance of making it through to the last eight with a victory over the Italians.

The Turks produced a 2-0 upset to order. But, despite working desperately hard for 90 minutes against a second-string Italian side, the Swedes missed their cue and Turkey took the second spot in the group.

Boosted by three victories, the Italians will play the second-place team from group A in the quarterfinals, which looks likely to be England. Turkey will take on Portugal in another quarterfinal. Both games are on June 24.

"It was up to us to prove what ability we did have and naturally we are disappointed," Swedish coach Lars Lagerback said. "I think that step by step we have improved in this tournament over the three matches but we didn't reach the levels we wanted to reach.

"We lost. Turkey won and we can only congratulate Turkey and Italy for qualifying from the group."

Larsson, who has missed most of the season after breaking his leg playing for Celtic, won the man-of-the-match award, a major achievement for a player who only just got his ticket to the tournament at the last minute.

"It was a nice goal but it was no comfort," the striker said.

The Swedes could not be faulted for effort against an Italian side which showed eight changes from the team which beat Belgium 2-0 in their previous match to clinch the group after two victories. At times Sweden looked capable of pulling off an upset.

Johan Mjallby, Fredrik Ljungberg and Magnus Svensson all went close for the Swedes in the first half before Di Biagio pounced at the near post to head in a corner from del Piero in the 39th minute and give the Italians a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Sweden could have equalized 25 minutes into the second half from a clever move. Ljungberg crossed from the left, Larsson headed the ball on to Patrik Andersson who was unmarked at the right-hand side of the box five meters (16 feet) from goal. But Andersson could only blast the ball at Italian keeper Francesco Toldo.

Just after news came through of Turkey's 2-0 lead one minute later, Arsenal's Ljungberg hit the side-netting with an excellent shot from the left.

Then Larsson put some drama back into the match when he took advantage of a mistake by Di Biagio 30 meters (97 feet) from goal, sprinted away on his own before rounding Toldo to score.

But, with the Swedes going forward, there was always the danger of an Italian counterattack.

Del Piero showed his finishing class when he struck a sweet left-footed shot into the left-hand corner from 20 meters (65 feet) for a fine winner.

SWEDES STILL UPBEAT AFTER DEFEAT
by Ciaran Baynes

SWEDISH assistant coach Lars Lagerbaeck insisted that his side were not out of the tournament despite their 2-1 defeat in the Group B opener in Brussels on Saturday.

"It's always a test when you lose your first game in a tournament, but we'll use it to put things right," Lagerbaeck said at the post-game news conference.

"The players will be down for 24 hours but they have already promised themselves they will bounce back, so I'm positive.

"We started very well and created chances, but we lost our rhythm and didn't play our normal game of starting attacks out of defence.

"Belgium pressured us and played very well on the counter and the two goals came at a psychologically bad time for us, either side of half time.

"After the red card of Patrik Andersson (pictured above), we tried and we'll take some positive things away from this.

"Overall, we didn't defend well. We were too stretched and failed to pressure the ball enough."

Lagerbaeck and head coach Tommy Soderberg will now look ahead to their next game against Turkey on Thursday in Eindhoven, meaning they will definitely have to pick up points against them and Italy to have a chance of progressing to the quarter final stages.

"We'll concentrate first on Turkey, but anything is possible. If we get it right we have a chance to beat anyone," Lagerbaeck added.

Lagerbaeck also disclosed that Roland Nilsson was brought off during the interval due to concussion and not to the error that led to the Belgian goal.

SWEDEN : A team only slightly less tedious than Norway. Missing flair plyers
this time around, their qualifying success may have been more indicative of
the softness of their group than a statement of their own quality. Will be
hard to beat, but unlikely to turn Italy over unless Larsson catches fire
and can play enough to do damage.

Sing-a-long-a-anthem

Ye free, ancient country. Ye high mountained north
Ye silent and free and so delightful
We greet you as loveliest land upon earth
Your shining sun, your sky your pastures green
You rest on your memories of days great and past
When all round the world your name was honoured
I know that you'll always remain the way you were
In my own Nordic land I'll live forever.

SWEDISH TV DINNER

Gravlax

2 1/2 kg fillets of centre-cut salmon with skin on; 3/4 cup of sugar; 1/2 cup of salt; 15 white peppercorns, crushed; 1 large bunch dill (do not chop)

Remove any small bones from the fillets. Mix the sugar, salt and pepper in a bowl. Cover the bottom of a baking dish with dill. Rub half of the sugar and salt mixture into both sides of the first fillet and lay it skin side down on the dill. Cover with more dill. Repeat with the second salmon fillet. Cover in a cling-film wrap, place a cutting board with a heavy weight on top, and marinate in the refrigerator for two to three days, turning the salmon over at least once a day. Scrape the marinade off and slice the fillets very thinly. Serve with a mustard sauce.
