Personally, I don't think they'll do that well - depends on Ilie

ROMANIA : Hard to figure. A bright start and some lovely neat soccer played through midfield, especially Hagi early on. But dodgy defending hurt, and a change in attitude in the second half proved discouraging and ineffective. The match was there for them to win, but the killer instinct was out to lunch; they cravenly settled for a point. Why? They certainly will be on the rack against Portugal, and England have a France 98 score to settle also. Where do they think the points are going to come from? Perhaps it is all for the better now as they will have to attack vigorously, and therein lies their strength. A less promising outfit than I thought before the tournament.

Desteapta-te, Romane
(Awaken Thee Romanian)

Awaken thee, Romanian, shake off the deadly slumber
The scourge of inauspicious barbarian tyrannies
And now or never to a bright horizon clamber
That shall to shame put all your raucous enemies.
It's now or never to the world we readily proclaim
In our veins throbs an ancestry of Roman
And in our hearts for ever we glorify a name
Resounding of battle, the name of gallant Trojan
Do look imperial shadows, Michael, Stephen, Corvinus
At the Romanian nation, your mighty progeny
With arms like steel and hearts of fire impetuous
It's either free or dead, that's what they all decree
Priests, rise the cross
This Christian army's liberating
The word is freedom, no less sacred is the end
We'd rather die in battle, in elevated glory
Than live again enslaved on our ancestral land

ROMANIAN TV DINNER

Apple pie with rum

500g apples, 6 eggs, 1 tbs sugar, 150g butter, 150g vanilla sugar, 100g flour, 2 tbs rum, 50g almonds, breadcrumbs for dusting the baking dish

Clean and peel the apples and grate them into a bowl. Then sprinkle one tablespoon of sugar and the rum over the top of the apples. Beat the egg yolks in a bowl, together with the butter and the vanilla sugar and then add the flour in a steady stream, making sure you mix it well to avoid leaving lumps. Then add the apples, and the almonds which should be blanched and finely chopped. When it has been mixed well, fold in the egg whites (which should be beaten to somewhere between soft and stiff peaks). Butter a pan and dust it with a sprinkling of plain breadcrumbs. Add the batter, and cook on a medium heat for about an hour. Turn it out of the pan and serve it warm with a fruit syrup.
