(Photos by Paul) | Stadium: Actually, we were not totally impressed. Nice, yes. Can see it for miles, yes. Probably great inside if we had been allowed up the lift!!! However, there's something odd about driving underneath a footie stadium - and I'm not too sure about whether I liked it or no. Having said that, it is easy to get to - and if you do get lost, there are plenty of signs. Also, loads of parking spaces (although dusty) and a restaurant (in bottom picture, owned by several ex-Ajax players now working in Catalonia). The shop is interestingly full with useless objects - but that is pretty normal - and certainly OK with me! Nice to see the smiling face of Frank Verlaat anyway! Of course, we could've paid for the hour's trip around the stadium - but no thanks - too expensive and we have little or no interest in Ajax.
Amsterdam: Fabulous! Never fails to appall and appeal! Our hotel, the Hotel Nova was dead central and excellent. Our room was enormous, with views out over a quiet square. There was no restaurant, but a frittery right outside - and many, many restaurants around and about, including countless McDonald's. Dam Square is 2 minutes walk away and the next street down was full of touristy shops - including a Euro 2000 official store. (Look in the backs of all the shops for very interesting and different gifts!!! :))) Also, the side-street to the right of the hotel has a coffee bar with fragrant smoke drifting from it! This hotel is bound to be fully booked during Euro 2000, I would think - but it's worth a try. Amsterdam is always worth visiting at any time of year. |
