Title: Suggested Reading

Listed here are some books that I found helpful in understanding more fully the history of the 14th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry. Some are out of print, while others are available at most bookstores or libraries.

These books were published before the turn of the century and may be hard to locate.

Chickamauga

History of the Fourteenth Ohio Regiment, O.V.V.I. from the beginning of the war in 1861 to its close in 1865. Compiled and written by Col. J. S. Chase. Toledo, 1881. (Certainly not the best regimental history ever written, but as of today, the ONLY one written about the 14th Ohio. Perhaps someday I will remedy this situation!)

Dedication of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park September 18-20, 1895. Compiled by H. V. Boynton. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1896.

Record of the Ohio Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission. Joseph C. McElroy. Cincinnati: Earhart & Richardson, Printers and Engravers, 1896.

A Memorial Record of the Soldier Spirit of Waterville. Toledo: B. F. Wade Printing Company, 1899.

Most of these books are either still in print or can be usually be found at most libraries.

  • Shiloh: The Battle That Changed the Civil War, by Larry J. Daniel. (The role played by the 14th Ohio in this campaign was minimal, but if you would like to learn more about this important battle this book is an excellent place to start.)

  • This Terrible Sound, by Peter Cozzens. (Account of the Battle of Chickamauga, and one of my favorites. The 14th OVI is actually mentioned numerous times!)

  • The Shipwreck of Their Hopes, by Peter Cozzens. (Details the Battles for Chattanooga, including Lookout Mountain and Mission Ridge)

  • Echoes of Battle: The Struggle for Chattanooga, by Richard A. Baumgardner and Larry M. Strayer. (Probably my all-time favorite book as regards the 14th Ohio. Includes numerous pictures and first-hand accounts.)

  • Echoes of Battle: The Atlanta Campaign, by Richard A. Baumgardner and Larry M. Strayer.

  • Campaign for Atlanta, by William R. Scaife.

  • March to the Sea, by William R. Scaife. (Both of Mr. Scaife's books contain excellent maps and descriptions of the campaigns and battles.)

Title: Links Related to the 14th Ohio

This first set of links is to general sites. Following this are links to specific battles and battlefields associated with the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Not all these sites in West Virginia are associated with the 14th Ohio. However, this part of the Civil War is so often overlooked that I included them all.
