History of The Regiment




37th Regiment Infantry

This was the third German Regiment raised in Ohio, and was recruited principally among the patriotic Germans of Cleveland, Toledo, and Chillicothe. The counties of Auglaize,Erie, Franklin, Mahoning, Mercer, Putnam, Tuscarawus, and Wyandotte furnished a number of men to this regiment also. Its organization was commenced under the second call of President Lincoln for 300 men in August of 1861. By the end of September seven full companies had reported, and on October 1st 800 men were enrolled. With this the regiment was placed in camp at Camp Dennison, and on October 2nd was mustered into Federal Service.

Colonel E. Sibler an accomplished German Officer; who had seen service in Prussia and Brazil was selected as Colonel. Louis Von Blessingh was selected as Lieutenant Colonel. Charles Ankel was selected as Major. During the remainder of 1861 the regiment performed operations in the Kanawha District and New River region of West Virginia.

During the year of 1862 the regiment saw duty or action at the following locations. Clifton (Nov 1861 - March 1862), Logan Court House and Guyandotte Valley (January 12-13), Virginia and Tennessee Railroad (May 10-18), Princeton (May 15,16,&17), Flat Top Mtn. (till August), Raleigh Court House (Aug. 1), Wyoming Court House (Aug. 2-8), Kanawha Valley (Aug. 29-Sept 18), repulse of Lorings attack on Fayetteville (Sept. 11), Charleston (Sept. 12-13), Point Pleasant (till Oct. 15), at Gauley Bridge (till Dec. 20). All of these were in West Virginia.

Ordered to Napoleon, Ark. on Dec. 20, 1862; thence to Youngs Point, LA January 21, 1863. During the year of 1863 the regiment saw duty or service at the following locations. Youngs Point, LA (till Mar. 1863); Expedition to Tolling Fork via Muddy, Steeles, and Black Bayous and Deer Creek (Mar.14-27); Demonstrations on Hains and Drumgolds Bluffs (Apr. 27-May 1); Movement to join the Army in the erar of Vicksburg, MISS via Richmond and Grand Gulf (May 2-14); Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 to July 4; Assault on Vicksburg (May 19&22); advance on Jackson (July 5-10); Siege of Jackson (July 10-17); in camp at Big Black (till Sept 26); Moved to Memphis, TENN Thence marched to Chattanooga (Sept. 26-Nov 21). Operations in Alabama (from Oct. 20-27); after that they returned to Tennessee where they saw service untill Febuary, 1864.

From there they marched and throughout the South (Georgia and the Carolinas) with General Sherman during his famous "March to the Sea". Afterwards which they marched to Washington, D.C., and was mustered out on August 7, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.





The 37th Ohio Infantry Regiment lost during it's service 9 Officers and 102 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 94 Enlisted men by disease. Total 206.
