The People That Love Them...

Paul & Cynthia

We started Highland Animal Sanctuary in 1994 right after we were married. At that time, it was just a dream--to someday be able to help homeless animals find permenant loving homes. We started out taking in stray cats and dogs that happened to "find" us. We kept most of them ourselves...but wanted to do more...and knew that we could not permenantly house and care for all of the dogs and cats that we continued to find.

Consequently, in 1996 we decided to "rescue" with a purpose. We decided to rescue needy animals, have them tested for diseases, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and wormed and then care for them until we could find the *perfect* home for each one.

Since the autumn of 1996, we have placed over 50 cats & kittens and over 10 dogs. All of the animals are fostered in our home until they are adopted. We, therefore, are somewhat limited in the number of animals that we can care for at any given time (particularly dogs). However, we intend to buy property and build a shelter during the next 7-10 years so that we are better able to help more animals in need. Until that time, we cannot accept animals that owners can no longer keep. Instead, we will continue to focus our efforts on animals that are abused and stray and have no one to care for them.
