Start by putting your hands
out in front of you with your palms down.
To multiply by a number, you
count over from the left how ever many groups of nine you need. You
then push over that finger. For instance, if it is 4 X 9, you count
over 4 fingers and push the 4th one down.
You count by tens until you
get to the down finger (the hump) and then you count by ones on the other
side of the down finger (the hump).
10 20 30
31 32 33 34 35 36
Your answer is 4 x 9 = 36!
Here is another example. The problem is 8 X 9.
Start at the left and count over 8. Push down the 8th finger. (Count thumbs like fingers.) Your hands will look like the following picture.
You count by tens until you
get to the down finger (the hump) and then you count by ones on the other
side of the down finger (the hump).
10 20 30 40 50 60 70
71 72
Your answer is 8 x 9 = 72!
