EXECUTIVE BRANCH

The executive branch of the United States government consists of the Executive Office of the President, the executive departments and the independent agencies.

The Executive Office of the President includes the White House offices and agencies.

Executive departments conduct the administration of the national government.

Independent agencies developed with the growth of government regulations.   The President appoints the members of these agencies with the Senate approval.

JUDICIAL BRANCH

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States.   It has a chief justice and eight associate justices appointed by the president of the United States and with the approval of the Senate.   The justices hold office for life.

There are about 95 other federal courts that are located in various cities.   Federal courts decide cases that involve the Constitution and federal laws.   Judges of these courts hold office for life and are appointed by the President with the approval of the Senate.

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

The legislative branch of the U.S. government includes the Senate and the House of Representatives - the Congress.   This branch also includes nine administrative agencies.

The Senate and the House of Representatives meet in separate chambers.   Congress makes, repeals, and amends federal laws.   Congress also levies federal taxes and appropriates funds for the government,

The Senate has 100 members.   Each state, regardless of size or population, has two senators, who serve six year terms.

The House of Representatives consists of 435 members.   A state's representation is based on the population.   The members of the House of Representatives serve two year terms.

There is no legal limit to the number of terms a member of Congress can serve.
