Edward Glenn "Fireball" Roberts dies from burns suffered in the May 24 World 600 NASCAR Grand National race at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.









July 3, 1953
For the third time in 10 days, Dick Rathmann finishes second in a NASCAR Grand National race. This time, it's behind Herb Thomas in a 200-lap, 100-mile dirt-track race at the Monroe County Speedway in Rochester, N.Y. He had finished behind Thomas on June 26 at High Point, N.C., and behind Fonty Flock two days later at Wilson, N.C.









July 4, 1984
President Ronald Reagan flies into Daytona Beach during the Pepsi Firecracker 400 to see Richard Petty get his 200th and final NASCAR Winston Cup victory at the Daytona International Speedway.

Red Byron, destined to become the first NASCAR Strictly Stock champion several months later, wins the first NASCAR-sanctioned race for the series that would become Winston Cup, contested on the 4.15-mile beach/road course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Butch Miller beats Mike Skinner by 0.0001 second in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Colorado National Speedway in Erie. It's the closest margin of victory in a major series in NASCAR history.

Texas native Shorty Rollins, who will later be named NASCAR Grand National racing's first rookie of the year, gets his first and only victory in a 150-lap, 50-mile race on the third-mile State Line Speedway in Busti, N.Y.









July 17, 1976
Still sore from injuries suffered in a vicious crash a week earlier, Bobby Allison manages to start a 420-lap NASCAR Winston Cup race at Nashville (Tenn.) Speedway USA. He makes one official lap before yielding to relief driver Neil Bonnett.









July 22, 1995
Patty Moise is a lead-lap seventh in the Humminbird Fishfinder 500K NASCAR Busch Series race at the Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, the highest finish for a female in that series. Her husband, Elton Sawyer, finishes 10th.
