| What we eat becomes us, literally. Food is necessary
to provide the fuel to live, to restore expended fuel, to build and rebuild
the body. To avoid weakening the body and allowing illness to set in, we
need to eat the right amounts of a wide variety of foods, rich in the proper
nutrients, and balance our caloric intake against our energy expenditure.
The exact amounts and types of foods required by the physical organism
will vary according to age, gender, metabolic rate, activity level, and
so forth.
No single diet can ever be realistically recommended
for everyone. Each person’s needs are unique. But, we all require proteins,
fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water in critical amounts.
I do not, however, want any of my readers to become "food fanatics" who
weigh, measure and analyze every mouthful of food they eat. I consider
this to be an abnormal practice that only generates a fear of food and
creates all kinds of erroneous notions regarding the proper proportions
of nutrients that the body needs. Rather than follow some self-proclaimed
"expert" and his or her idea of the perfect diet, simply ask the question,
again: "What is the most natural method?"
Hunger and appetite are two totally different things. One is the natural demand of the organism for nourishment, while the other is the abnormal cravings of the senses for temporary gratification. Real thirst, for example, is the body’s need for water. It does not require soft drinks or alcohol to satisfy this need. Only water will quench thirst, but we often crave the sweetness and bite of a carbonated beverage to satisfy our senses. This does not mean that you should abstain from all experiences of sensual gratification and live the life of a health food fanatic, either. Such denial of your cravings will only build up a kind of emotional pressure that will eventually explode into a binge, a gluttonous period of over- indulgence. The way of the Mystic is to be neither a glutton nor a starvationist. The Mystic prefers a diet of raw vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, bread made from whole wheat, and water. But, he or she will not shun the occasional well-done steak, hamburger, pizza, lasagna, pastry, pie, or soft drink. Remember, even the worst of diets is better for you, if it is thoroughly assimilated, than the healthiest combination of foods that simply passes from the body unabsorbed. That is why, today, we have so many well fed people who suffer from malnutrition. The human body is constantly undergoing changes. Muscle, fat, tissue, flesh, and fluids are continually being used up and worn-out. Therefore, new living cells are constantly being manufactured and redistributed throughout the system. And, all of this activity requires enormous amounts of fuel. It is not so much what we eat that matters, but how much we assimilate that provides our body with the necessary fuel. Foods thoroughly masticated until it seems to just vanish from the mouth, without any effort to swallow, and liquids held in the mouth for a few moments before swallowing, will yield up over two (2) times the nutrients and three (3) times the Vital Force as food and drink which is hastily gulped down. Chewing any food thoroughly, even junk food, will release whatever nutrition is within its cells and ease the digestive process. And, food properly taken in this way is far more satisfying and filling, so that one does not need to eat as much. I have no wish to press arbitrary diets and rules
upon my readers. Therefore, eat anything you like, but chew it up completely
and experience a wide variety of natural, as well as man-made, foods. Above
all... Do not be afraid to eat when you are truly hungry.
