CIVIL WAR HARD IMAGES AND TIN TYPES

13-01-12 - Quarter Plate Tintype: As if he were on the company street! Quarter plate tintype, uncased, but with mat, frame and glass, of a Civil War Union officer posed in front of a painted backdrop showing a line of tents running back from the right with a stack of muskets in the background. Three-quarter length, knees-up, standing view, one hand at side, the other apparently part way in his pocket. Turned slightly to the viewer’s right to help with the illusion of the backdrop that he is standing in a camp rather than a photographer’s studio, and rather like he has paused while walking across the campground. He wears a tall forage cap typical of private purchase headgear and a brass-buttoned military vest showing a watchchain beneath an opened sack coat with dark collar and no buttons or insignia visible. Nice wide elbow and a breast pocket on the coat. Possibly a well-heeled enlistedman, but very typical of an officer in “undress” uniform as worn around camp, etc. Sharp focus on face and hand at his side. The camera even captures the texture of the coat: what looks like a velvet collar and a heavy weave to the body, suggesting a fall or winter visit to the photographer. Handsome fellow with a penetrating gaze directly into the camera lens. Scattered freckling to the emulsion overall with some scratches and rubs. One small rust speck to right of subject and line of corrosion at the bottom hem of his coat, but a nice sized shot of a Civil War officer posed in an interesting fashion by the photographer. A great Civil War portrait with lots of “jazz” ... $150.00

10-09-004 - Sixth Plate Armed Yankee w Sword: Extremely crisp and clear tintype photo, has numerous little bumps and blemishes that are slightly distracting but not flaking or anything like that. Our man is drawing his sword in this “implied action” image. I guess he sees a reb over to the side of the photographer’s studio.

10-09-009 - 1/6th Plate Tintype 14th New Hampshire Sergeant in full case - Early war view with high collar frock coat and dark trousers. Our sergeant is holding his forage cap decked out in the unique style of New Hampshire units with the letters “NHV” surmounted by a hunting horn with numeral inside, and then surmounted by the company letter. This cap insignia clearly shows us this is the sergeant of Co. “E” 14th NHV. Assuming this is an 1862 vintage image, which it appears to be, a cursory check of New Hampshire records shows there are five sergeants in Co. “E” in 1862 ages 24, 26, 30,30, and 40. My guess is that this soldier is 26 years old… so this may be Sergt. Walter Buck who enlisted when the regiment first formed in August 1862 died in the service in September of 1864 and is buried in Baltimore Maryland. This “I.D.” is speculative and I will let you research more.
Overall very good in a full leatherette case with repaired spine ... $295.00 k09

10-09-018 - 1/4th Plate Ambrotype Two Armed Yankees. A standing pose of two Union infantrymen. Image is good but somewhat light in the contrast department. Housed in mat, frame, and glass only… no case. A bargain priced image at $185.00 k13

10-09-023 - 1/6th Plate Tintype and a full case Rare Artistic Pose - Seated side view pose of a soldier holding his cap… most unusual. The photographer had a sense of style unlike most of the 19th century Brady wannabes. Strong solarization halo but otherwise superb.

10-11-010 - 1/6th Plate Ambrotype New Hampshire Colonel in full case – A fine early war view of a seated militia Colonel from New Hampshire holding his sword… I am presuming New Hampshire as that is where the image originally surfaced to the collector market. The condition, contrast, and clarity are very nice. The uniform coat is an interesting militia example with eight or nine buttons in each row and single border shoulder straps on each shoulder. Close scrutiny of the straps show the spread wing eagle of a full Colonel. A very pleasant early war view of a rare subject.
Finding commanding officers in hard image format is rare ... $475.00 k25
