Black Cultural Center Gets a Facelift

From seminars and tutoring services to club meetings, there’s always something happening at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center.

And more will be happening there, as the Center, 153 West 12th Ave., is currently being renovated for that reason.

The Center serves as a meeting place for Ohio State’s black community, where groups like the South Area Black Students Association (SABSA) and the OSU National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) congregate on a regular basis. The newly-remodeled building will allot more space for classrooms, private tutoring rooms, and a larger computer room. The expansion of the building should bring some new faces by to see what things – old and new – the Cultural Center has to offer.

”Hopefully the building will attract more students,” said G.A.A. Pam Durham. “There will be more services offered.”

With such high expectations for the new building, many people wondered when the construction would be finished. The renovation began this past summer and was scheduled to be done by Nov. 15. However, “when dealing with an old building, many times you cannot always meet deadline,” explained Glenn Rodgers, a spokesperson for Elite Building Company. Rodgers, whose company is working on the Center, expects the building’s renovation to be completed before the spring.
