A beautiful child, trapped inside a huge flower underwater, summoned The Legendary Magic Knights to help the world she lived in...

Tokyo, 1993. Hikaru Shidou and fellow students from a girls-only junior high school were on a study tour at Tokyo Tower. Fuu Hououji, a student from a girls school that had high academic standards, and Umi Ryuuzaki from an exclusive girls school, made an acquaintance with her for the first time. Suddenly a huge blinding light surrounding them. The beautiful child appeared, begging help from The Legendary Magic Knights. The floor underneath the three girls melt, sucking them in, transporting them to another dimension.

They were up in the sky when they got there, falling rapidly to the ground. Just in time a giant flying fish came to the rescue. They never knew that a fine young man, dressed in black, had been spying on them from the mirror-like surface of a small pool inside his palace.

The fish dove down into the surface, leaving the girls falling to the ground. They introduced themself to one another. Then came a little boy, actually a 745 years old magic guru, telling them that the world was Cefiro, and it was Princess Emeraude who had summoned them to become The Legendary Magic Knights. They were panic-stricken when he told them they could only return to their own dimension after rescuing Cefiro first.

Back at the palace of Zagato, the young man aforementioned, he spoke to his agents about the arrival of Magic Knights. He then ordered Alcione to murder those girls.

Meanwhile, the magic guru explained that since the Princess had been captured, the peaceful and tranquil world of Cefiro where human, fairies and other creatures had once lived in harmony, had changed into a horrible world full with constant battles and chaos. He told them Princess Emeraude, who served as The Pillar of Cefiro, had used to kept the peace only with her prayer, and it did work since in Cefiro a will determined everything and trust was the ultimate power. But a high priest, Zagato, kidnapped the Princess and held her captive in some place unknown, as his power was equal to the Princess'. The Magic Knights had to come from another dimension, resurrected their Machine Gods and saved the Princess. They needed appropriate equipments, so he gave them armors and inherited his magic from the elements of fire, water, and air to Hikaru, Umi and Fuu.

Just after he had taught Hikaru how to use her magic, a tiny bird came and told him that Zagato's agent was about to come. He summoned a griffin and ordered them to leave, while he stayed and trying to slow down the enemy. He told them to head to the west, find Silent Forest where Presea lived. At that place they would get their weapons and Mokona. Just before the griffin took off, Hikaru asked him his name, and he told her it was Clef, Guru Clef.

The agent landed behind Clef and greeted him. It was Alcione riding on top of a unicorn. She turned out to be his former disciple. She attacked him with Sharp Ice Shootings, and he responded with Round Wall spell. Alcione then summoned a two-headed giant wolf to keep him busy, while she went on chasing the Magic Knights. She managed to keep up and attacked them with the same spell she'd casted before. Finally Hikaru faced Alcione and casted her Fire Arrows. She went limp as the flames consumed the agent and her horse. Then Hikaru spoke to the griffin to take them to Silent Forest.

The girls finally arrived at the Silent Forest. They spotted a house nearby and calling for the owner. But the house was unlocked so they went in, and found a little bunny-like creature that they thought was Presea. Suddenly a cage was dropped, trapping them inside. A beautiful girl came out, thinking it was Mokona inside the cage. But she quickly realized it wasn't the bunny. She accused the girls for messing around. They refused to take the charge, telling her the front door had been unlocked so they'd just stepped in. She was shocked hearing this. She explained that Guru Clef made that key that wouldn't worked properly only to the Magic Knights. She then released them and introduced herself as Presea, the famous weapon creator in Cefiro. She had been told to give them weapons. Then she led them to a room where her weapons were kept.

In the room, she let them choose their weapons. Presea only made weapons that could only be used by one person, so each person would have a unique one. The girls had to go to the Legendary Spring of Eterna to get Escudo, the mineral their weapons would be made from. Escudo, the Legendary Ore, was the only mineral able to make advancing weapons, the ones changing into better forms and becoming more powerful, together with the growth of their owners' skills and mental energy. The weapons made from Escudo were the keys to rise the Machine Gods. The girls had to carry weapons, as in Silent Forest all kind of magic were held disfunction by the forest barrier. So they searched for the right weapons and found a sword for Hikaru, a rapier for Umi and a set of a bow and arrows for Fuu. Then, Presea told them Mokona would guide them to the spring.

Outside Presea's house, the Magic Knights was about to go. Presea used this last moment to ask them their names, while up on the branch of a tree, a young man had been watching them silently.

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu introduced themselves to Presea. She promised to make them powerful weapons. Then the girls started their journey.

In the forest the girls got panic because Mokona seemed to not knowing which way to go. When suddenly it leapt off to an open field, the girls followed and encountered a monster. The girls quickly drew their weapons, which each one suited its owner's ability, and managed to kill the monster using only their skills with weapons, because Hikaru's spell just didn't work.

Only few moments after, another monster appeared. This time a stranger killed it. It was the young man who'd been spying on them since they came out from Presea's house. He told them his name was Ferio, and he was also going to Eterna Spring to get Escudo. Hikaru and Umi were panic-stricken hearing this. But Fuu quietly arranged a strategy to make use of Ferio. She succeeded in convincing Ferio to believe the girls knew the way to Eterna, and they were willing to tell him where the exit was, under one condition: he had to escort them to the exit. Ferio had no choice but to accept the offer.

Mokona showed them the way by pointing the beam coming out from a jewel at its head to the exit. They rushed to it, running away from a flying monster while clearing their way from other monsters emerging from the ground. The girls impressed Ferio by showing him their abilities, and he then showed them how to beat the flying monster. His action almost killed the monster, but as its last effort, it fired a giant fireball from its mouth to Fuu, who was standing offguard in the open. Luckily Ferio were fast enough to save her.

The exit now was right before their eyes. They hurried to get out of the forest, when suddenly Umi, who was running in the front, was attacked by Alcione's Sharp Ice Shootings. Badly wounded, she fell unconscious. Then Alcione told them they would never gain victory over her because she was a former disciple of Clef. She betrayed her mentor and became Zagato's agent because she was in love with him.

Hikaru was very angry hearing this, and she stood up to face Alcione. The duel was intense, as Hikaru's anger raised the power of her spell. But Alcione was still too powerful to her. Just when Hikaru was in a critical point, Umi gained her conciousness. She straighted up, asking Mokona for a spell because she wanted to help Hikaru. Surprisingly, it was Clef speaking to her using Mokona as mediator. He taught Umi her magic. She then casted her Water Dragon towards Alcione, who failed to avert the attack. The agent vanished, but Umi collapsed to the ground, exhausted from her effort.

Fuu decided it was her turn to save Umi. She asked Mokona for a spell that could heal Umi. Again, Clef spoke to her and taught her magic. She casted Healing Wind that cured Umi and made her collect herself. All of them were very relieved. The girls pledged to be friends forever and would work as a solid team to accomplish their mission.

At that time Ferio had realized these girls were the Magic Knights. He then told them the complete version of the legend: "When the Pillar was in distress, the Legendary Magic Knights from other dimension would fight for her using the power of the Machine Gods". All couldn't comprehend why the knights had to come from other dimension. Furthermore, Ferio explained Cefiro became a catastrophic place because the Pillar couldn't pray to keep everything under control. This made the inhabitants restless and afraid and in result, their negative emotions created horrible monsters.

Once again Mokona beamed to the spring. Ferio took of, but before he did, he gave one of his earrings to Fuu and kissed her hand, which made her blushed beet-red.

At Zagato's palace, Alcione, still alive but badly hurt, pleaded to be given one more chance to murder the girls. Having lost his patience, Zagato bewitched her to disappear. His other agent, a boy named Ascot, volunteered to go and 'play' with the girls.

The girls came to a wide open field. But they found no sign of a spring, not even water. Then they discovered an odd phenomenon: a 'line' floating in the air, not too far from the ground. Mokona led them to see the 'line' from a higher place. They were very surprised. The 'line' turned out to be the Spring of Eterna. This legendary spring was actually, as Fuu called it, a two dimensional spring.

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu were still wondering where the Escudo located. Then suddenly Mokona jumped into Eterna. Seing this, the girls pulled themselves together to follow it. As soon as their bodies entered the water, each was surrounded by whirpools that separated them from one another. They all lost consciousnes.

A moment later, each awoke in a dark empty space. Then something unexpected happened. Hikari, Hikaru's dog, emerged in front of her. Umi's parents appeared from the darkness. And Fuu met a copy of herself. They were dumbfounded. But not long, as they were attacked severely. The girls defended themselves half-heartedly, because they couldn't bring themselves to hurt those that were most valuable to them, those they loved most.

It looked like there were no way they were going to win the battle. But Princess Emeraude showed up. She told them to pulled themselves, convincing that they would never be hurt by those they loved most. The girls, now seeing the truth of her saying, fought back using brand new spells: Red Thunderbolt, Blue Waterspouts, and Green Whirlwind. The enemies were exterminated, and the three pieces of Escudo materialized from their remains. Together with that, the girls' armors changed shape into a better one. The girls were taken back to the surface and up floating above Eterna.

Presea had been waiting for them. Without wasting any time, she started making their weapons as soon as the girls jumped off to the ground. She used all her mental energy to forge the ore into the most powerful weapons ever existed in Cefiro. She made Hikaru and Fuu swords, and a rapier for Umi. After the exhaustive effort to create the weapons, she fell but luckily didn't lose consciousness. She explained it was still possible for the weapons to change their forms, according to their masters' will power. She reminded the girls that in Cefiro the will determines everything, including the quality of weapons and magic, and most importantly, the future.

Mokona then beamed a flying source from the jewel on its head. Presea told the girls to go resurrect the Machine Gods. They and Mokona boarded the vehicle, and it took off flying them across Cefiro. They saw the same beautiful scenery they had seen on the first time they arrived: the ocean, the floating mountain, and the volcano. They didn't enjoy it long because suddenly the source fell rapidly into the ocean.

The vehicle took them to a glorious palace located deep in the ocean. At this point, Umi fell into trance. They landed inside the palace, which had air pocket in it. Leading the way through the gate, Umi told them one of the Machine Gods were here. They found a gigantic painting of a dragon in the main chamber. Then the dragon stepped out of the picture, as Umi approaching it. He told her his name was Ceres.

Suddenly Hikaru and Fuu were greeted by the boy Ascot. He gave them quick introduction then summoned his monsters. Once again the two girls had to fight those ugly monsters. Meanwhile, Ceres asked Umi for a proof that she was worthy to ride him. He wanted her to show him power of her will. Umi returned from her trance, seeing her friends were hurt. Her anger rose, and she went on killing those monsters with the assistance of Hikaru and Fuu. But one of the monsters managed to capture both of them. At first, afraid that Ascot would harm her friends, Umi stopped her attack on the monsters, but together Ceres' demand and Ascot's mockery convinced her that she had to do anything to release her friends. She fought bravely, and beat Ascot and his monsters. Finally she knew Ascot really cared for his friends, just like her to Hikaru and Fuu. He only wanted his friends to stay in the palace with him, that was why he worked for Zagato. He was angry because people hated him and his friends without knowing that they weren't evil. Umi slapped him, told him to stand tall and proud, and just be himself. If he chose to be Zagato's agent, he and his monsters would really become evil. Furthermore she told him Hikaru and Fuu were her most valuable friends, more valuable than herself.

Just after her last words, the girls' armors and weapons were upgraded. Ceres acknowledged Umi's power and transformed into his real shape. He then disappeared into her breastplate. Hikaru and Fuu awoke to find everything was under control.

Zagato and his agents weren't pleased seeing that. Caldina, the beautiful dancer, offered herself to go.

Again Mokona and the girls were off to the sky. The vehicle brought them to the floating mountain. It was Fuu's turn to fall into trance. She told the other girls the mountain was the Sky Palace, where a Machine God dwelled inside. She was taken away by a small whirlwind inside the palace, while the others landed. Caldina had already been there. When she introduced herself, Hikaru and Umi were surprised to hear her speaking Osaka dialect.

Fuu, who was brought to the center of the palace, saw a double-winged Phoenix materialized from the whirlwinds. He told her his name was Windam. All of a sudden Hikaru and Umi attacked her. Caldina appeared and introduced herself as a dancer and an illusion-maker capable of controlling one's mind. She claimed herself to be a professional, and would only work for someone if she got paid. Hikaru and Umi had been put under her spell. She intended to let the girls kill each other. Fuu couldn't bring herself to fight her friends. Then she heard Windam demanded her to prove she had enough will power to ride him. But new problem arose. Caldina had also taken control over Fuu's body. She started slashing her friends, who weren't able to break free from her Wind of Reprimand. Windam once again asking for the proof. Hearing that, Fuu's power reached a higher level, she managed to break the spell and beat Caldina down. When Caldina asked how she did that, she said it was a matter of will. She would sacrifice herself for her friends, giving all her best to save them. It had got nothing to do with how long they'd been together. Then Caldina said she had done enough damage and had received her reward. She didn't want to go any further. She wishes Fuu good luck and said that Zagato told her there was something more important than Cefiro.

The girls' armor and weapons underwent their second transformation. Windam approved Fuu's ability, and in return, revealed his robotic form. Then, like Ceres did, he disappeared into the girl's breastplate. Hikaru and Umi regained their consciousness, and join Fuu in cheerfulness.

Again, Zagato greeted Princess Emeraude, who was curling miserably inside the underwater flower prison begging for the Magic Knights to come. She pleaded Zagato to stop. But he told her he'd never change his mind, no matter what the consequences. He informed her the girls from other dimension had resurrected Ceres and Windam. He then revealed someone named Rafaga to the Princess. Rafaga was her former chief bodyguard, whose duty was to fight monsters. He had been brainwashed by Zagato, and was sent to kill the Magic Knights.

Meanwhile, the girls had arrived in front of a palace located inside of a volcano. They noticed their armors and weapons had undergone dramatic upgrades. Umi and Fuu exchanged weapons. They soon discovered that the weapons were useless if handled by any person other than the original owners. Umi's rapier would melt into water, while Fuu's sword, that was very light for her, would turn extremely heavy.

Suddenly the palace gate opened, and a ribbon of flames encircled Hikaru and took her inside. She saw a horned wolf materialized from the flames. The wolf introduced himself as Rayearth. Just like Ceres and Windam had done, he asked Hikaru to show him that she had enough will power to be worthy to ride him. Then he flew outside, followed by her. She was shocked seeing Umi and Fuu trapped between spikey rocks, hurt and unable to move. Then she saw Rafaga.

Rafaga said his mission was to kill the Magic Knights, and started to attack. The pressure produced by his sword could blow up rocks and create craters on the ground. He didn't only attack Hikaru, but also aimed the blows at Umi and Fuu. Realizing that the two girls couldn't protect themselves, Hikaru stood in the way, taking the blow for herself. She was bleeding hard. Umi and Fuu begged her to move away, but she didn't listen. Even Rayearth told her she was going to die if she continued. He said the only way to win and stay alive was to forget about her friends, stop being their shield, and fight freely. But Hikaru refused. She would never leave Umi and Fuu, her most precious friends. She would help them, and returned to Tokyo together. With this, she leapt over Rafaga and swung her sword with all her strength. Umi told her to use her spells, but Hikaru said she wouldn't because her opponent didn't. She talked to Rafaga and mentioned the Princess' name. Rafaga was distracted for awhile, but the spell Zagato had casted upon him couldn't be broken easily. Suddenly he scream and blew a close attack to Hikaru. Umi tried to use Water Dragon to help her, but Rayearth blocked it and said it was Hikaru's fight. It was no use to interfere. Meanwhile Rafaga succeeded to push Hikaru to the ground. He took her sword to slay her, but it became flames and consumed him. It broke Zagato's spell. Rafaga regained consciousness and told Hikaru Zagato had kidnapped the princess.

The girls' armors and weapons underwent their final transformation. Rayearth acknowledged Hikaru's strength and revealed his true shape. Ceres and Windam each beamed out from Umi's and Fuu's breastplates. The Machine Gods took the girls inside of them. Then Mokona aimed the beam produced by his jewel to the sky. The girls took off, and discovered that Cefiro's sky was actually its ocean reflected by a giant mirror. Zagato dwelled on the other side of the mirror. The girls broke the mirror with their spells, and encountered another Machine God, Zagato's. Soon the battle began. The girls didn't know the Princess was watching the battle in tears.

Zagato was still too powerful for the girls. He swore to end the Legend of Magic Knights with his own hand. Hikaru encouraged her friends to hold on. If they could defeat Zagato, they would be able to rescue the Princess, save Cefiro, and return to Tokyo. They would fight together and would not lose. They asked Zagato why he kidnapped the Princess. He asked back, why only Princess Emeraude praying for Cefiro. She didn't have freedom, her fate was to do nothing but pray for Cefiro. But the girls seemed to not listening. They combined their spells, producing Spiral Flash which successfully blasted Zagato and his Machine God. Before he died, he wished for Princess Emeraude's freedom. Seeing this, the Princess screamed, calling his name over and over.

Princess Emeraude began to change shape. From an innocent young girl transformed into a beautiful woman with anger reflected from her expression. She broke free from the prison, flew to the surface and entered Zagato's palace. The Magic Knights also went inside. They spotted her, and when she told them she was Emeraude, they almost couldn't believe her. Hikaru told her they had resurrected the Machine Gods with the assistance of Mokona, fought with weapons made by Presea and spells taught by Clef, and defeated Zagato using the Gods. Emeraude's anger rose. She'd never forgive those who had killed her beloved Zagato.

Yet another Machine God emerged behind the Princess. It had a shape of a female centaur. Princess Emeraude was beamed inside. As the palace collapsed, the girls were also transported inside their Machine Gods and fled outside, followed by the Princess. On her way out she found Zagato's sword and picked it up. She started casting her spells that were even more powerful than Zagato's. The girls fought her half-heartedly, not sure what to do. Just when they were in a critical condition, they heard the voice they knew. They quickly recognized it as the 'real' Emeraude's. But the voice explained the woman inside the Machine God was her. A 'foolish' version of her who chose to live for a person she loved instead of living as the Pillar of Cefiro. It wasn't Zagato's action that caused Cefiro's destruction. She said it was all her fault. She had to pray continuously for Cefiro. But she couldn't lie to herself that she loved Zagato more. It was her choice to hide herself inside the water prison, to avoid seeing Zagato. But she still couldn't take her mind off him. So she decided to summon the Magic Knights from other dimension, to kill her, because the Pillar couldn't kill herself, and couldn't be harmed by Cefironians. Only a Pillar had the spell to summon Magic Knights to kill herself if something like that happened. She begged them to kill her, while her other version delivering attacks after attacks full of anger, before her heart full with hatred and urge to kill, before she prayed for Cefiro's extinction. At first the girls refused. But Emeraude begged them to fulfill her real wish, which was to reunite her with Zagato forever.

Rayearth, Ceres, and Windam combined into a new Machine God. Emeraude rushed to kill the girls, but they stabbed her Machine God first. The Princess smiled, for she now only belonged to Zagato, and a blinding light encircled her Machine God. The girls were transported back to Tokyo Tower. Weeping in one another's arms, saying they couldn't accept what had just happened.
