Big News!

Rachel is doing fine. She has forgotten about her surgery, but continues to try to play on the scar for sympathy. As with most parents, we continue to be amazed with how fast her vocabulary is expanding. She has also forced us to review some of our bad habits. Let us just say that there are a couple of words in her vocabulary that we wish were not there (Rachel's father gets most of the blame, but not all of the blame).

Has anyone tried, recently, to order a cup of water with a combo meal in a drive-thru? Try to imagine this conversation:
Them (substitute any person at any drive-thru): Hello! Can I take your order please?
Us: Yes :Give orders:
Them: and what would you like to drink?
Us: :Give our drink orders: and water with the Kid's Meal.
Them: long period of silence... You get a soda with that order.
Us: I understand. We want water.
Them: long period of silence... You still have to pay for the soda.
Us: Ok. We still want the water.
Them: :more silence: Do you want bottled water?
Us: No, just a cup of water.
Them: You still have to pay for that.
Us: We know. We'll pay the difference.
Them: You can get bottled water.
Us: No, just the cup of water.
Them: :again with the silence: You still have to pay for the soda.
Us: That's fine. We'll pay the difference just give us the water.
Them: Do you want bottled water?
Of the several conversations we've had here are some of our final statements before getting our water:

Nice: No, just give us the cup of water for our kid.
Frustrated: Look, we know we have to pay for the pop. Just fill a cup with Sprite then dump it out and refill it with water! We'll pay for the pop!

We always got the water. In fact, on our first try they gave us the water and an unwanted soda!!

Has anyone else in our Ohio Family noticed the proliferation of the Green colored 'Ladybugs'? It seems that once more 'We' (meaning whoever was in charge of this at the US Agriculture departments) imported a species not native to the US of A and turned it loose. Much like other attempts that have gone awry (See the Carp, Killer Bees, etc...) without adequate research in also finding a natural predator to these pests, they have and continue to proliferate. These insects are supplanting the native (red colored) Ladybugs and even have the added attraction of attacking (biting) us humans. Big Thank Yous sent to the US Agriculture Department for, probably, overspending and under researching this 'cure'.

In an effort to broaden my horizans, I have taken to watching Indian T.V. programming. Late Night V. It is a surprisingly good mix of contemporary music and interviews. Rachel also watches these programs. But then anything with music currently pleases her. Glenda, so far, has refrained from partaking in this international attempt at cultural enlightenment. (ok, the truth is there was nothing on t.v. when I stumbled onto this program. But it is fairly entertaining and I have become a regular viewer.)

The long dry spell is over...College and Pro Football has begun! Watching the Buckeye's play is a mixture of extended cheers and heartbreaks. After 3 Big Ten games I have noticed that the cheers and groans have begun to follow a pattern. Many cheers for our Defensive and Special Teams squads. Not enough compliments can be used to describe their play. On the other hand, watching the offense struggle has boiled down to a mixture of morbid fascination and low expectations. Good thing for me the Cleveland Indians are participating and doing exceptionally well in the AL post-season series.

While Rachel is not 100 percent bilingual, she is definitely making a serious attempt at being so. Could it be that her father might soon learn more than the smattering of words he now works with?

As for the everpresent concerns (when will we have our second child?) We have the following update: Rumor around the office indicates the feasiblity study is going to reflect favorably on a joint venture. But plans are still being reviewed and no firm commitment is expected during this last quarter. It is being reported that should both sides are showing interest in the anticipated merger.
