"STAMM REPORT: Playoff Preview (Round
2)
"Division III - Saturday, 7:00 PM at Hillsboro : Cincinnati Purcell Marian (8-3) vs Portsmouth (11-0).
"The Portsmouth Trojans will have their perfect record put to a severe test as they face a member of one of the State's toughest football (or any other sport) leagues in the Purcell Marian Cavaliers (8-3) of the Greater Catholic League (North Division) in Division III Regional Football Playoff action. The Cavliers defeated Gallipolis Gallis Academy 41-12 at Gallipolis Saturday evening.
"Justin Blackley led the Cavaliers with two touchdown runs of 80 and 30 yards. Vince Berry had a pair of short touchdown runs and quarterback Adam White tossed a 30 yard scoring pass to Brandon Elliott.
"They forced six turnovers by the Blue Devils in the game. Blackley rushed for 1095 yards in the regular season on 140 carries (7.8 avg.) and scored 15 touchdowns. The Cavaliers lost games this season to Dayton Chaminade, Cincinnati McNicholas and Cincinnati LaSalle. The Number One ranked Trojans are coming off a 34-6 opening round victory over Jackson. Joseph Parker rushed for 141 yards (a touchdown) and Jeremy Hamrick added 67 and a rushing score. Quarterback Josiah Young stepped up with a big game with 11 of 16 passing for 146 yards and three touchdowns (47 yards to D. Jay Carter, 5 yards to Jeremy Hamrick and 14 yards to Derek Thompson.
"The respect that the Catholic League of Cincinnati receives around the state is well deserved as the players that have played for the Moellers, Elders, St. Xavier's, McNicholas, Chaminade's and others makes an impressive list. The Trojans have earned a lot of respect this season but that Number One ranking also puts a target on their back. The challenge of playing and beating one of Cincinnati's best and most talented teams will be great, but the rewards of such a win is also great."
[There was more, about the Greenup County vs. Whitley County Kentucky round 1 playoff game, but I chose not to include it.]
