Chapter 4
Carly was officially worried; she'd been sitting by the phone for
the
past hour. Jason was late, really late. That just didn't happen.
It
should be here watching movies or something equally meaningless.
Carly would have gone looking for him, but Bobbie still wasn't
home
and Carly had no idea when she would be. So Carly had to satisfy
herself with calling the brown stone every few minutes. She thanked
God Sonny wasn't there. She knew that if he had been he would
have
done nothing but berate her.
She couldn't believe the way she'd let him get to her today.
Like she
actually wanted to go camping with a little kid and Hannah. The very
idea was laughable. Carly had come home and hung out with Lucas. She
had a ton of homework to do but she was in no mood to deal with math
and history. When Jason had finally called and said he was on his way
over, Carly had been elated. Now she was just worried.
Carly jumped off the couch when she heard the doorbell ring. She
bolted for the door swinging it open and nearly fell over at who was
in front of her.
"Corinthos, what are you doing here?" Carly tried to keep her
voice
calm. She failed miserably, Jason didn't seem to be anywhere and
Sonny was ringing her doorbell late on a Saturday night. Something
was wrong.
"Can I come in?" Sonny tried to talk normally; even though
normal was
the last thing he felt.
Carly felt her heart drop to her knees.
"What happened? Where is he?"
Sonny walked in and looked around for Bobbie, Carly would need her.
"Where's Bobbie?"
Carly sat down in the nearest chair.
"Just tell me."
"Jason's in the hospital, he was in an accident."
Sonny studied Carly's face for any sign that what he told her was
registering.
Carly calmly walked over to the phone, picking it up and quickly
dialling.
"Hi, it's Carly,"
`Yeah I know, I kind of have an emergency here. Could you come
and
watch Lucas till Bobbie gets home."
"All right, thanks."
Carly hung up the phone and then turned to Sonny.
"Lucky will be here in a few minutes and then you're taking
me to the
hospital."
Normally Sonny would have been mad at Carly ordering him around, but
Sonny was in shock himself. Jason's injuries were serious and he
was
trying to stop himself from breaking down. He was only mildly aware
of how strange Carly was acting.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Carly was strangely silent through out the entire ride to the
hospital. Neither Sonny or Carly spoke. Both had their minds on other
things. More important things.
As soon as the elevator door opened Carly made a mad dash for the
reception desk.
"Jason Morgan Quartermaine, where is he?"
A somewhat disgruntled nurse looked Carly over.
"Are you family?"
Carly glared at the nurse. It was obvious she wasn't family.
Everyone
knew the Quartermaines and she sure as hell wasn't one.
"No"
The nurse sighed and spoke in a monotone voice.
"I can only talk to family."
Carly was beginning to lose it.
"Just tell me if he's okay, please."
The nurse started to walk away but turned back saying.
"He's in surgery; you can wait in the waiting room."
Carly nodded turning and walking towards the waiting room. She sank
down onto the couch. She was only vaguely aware of Sonny sitting down
beside her. Neither said anything. They just stared into space.
Finally Carly turned to Sonny.
"What exactly happened? Who called you?
Sonny took his hands away from his face and sighed.
"Jason had his wallet with our address and phone number in it.
They
called and asked for his parents. I asked what happened, they told me
he was in a bad motorcycle accident. I came and got you and here we
are.
Carly nodded, she wanted more answers, Sonny didn't seem to have
them
though. Carly's head turned towards the elevator as she heard the
unmistakable banter of the Quartermaines.
"If you hadn't of let him move out and buy that fowl
contraption he
wouldn't be here"
Edward bellowed at Alan and Monica. He was only half-aware of who he
was blaming. It was one of those things that just came naturally to
him in a crisis.
Monica ignored him and headed for the first nurse she saw. A few
minutes later she and the rest of the Quartermaines descended upon
Sonny and Carly.
"What the devil are you doing here Corinthos?"
Edward glared at Sonny well Monica stared contemptibly at Carly.
Sonny groaned and turned to face the Q's.
"We're here for Jason. How is he? They won't tell us
anything."
Edward smiled at that.
"Why should they? It's not like you' re family"
Alan rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Shut up father, Sonny he's not doing very well he's in
surgery. We
won't really know anything till he gets out and wakes up."
"He has to be okay, he just has to."
Carly whispered to herself, however it did not go unnoticed by Sonny.
Monica gritted her teeth. She didn't like Sonny or Carly and at
the
moment they were the last two people she wanted to deal with.
"Go home, you aren't helping anything by being here."
Sonny narrowed his eyes in contempt.
"Jason is like a brother to me, I'm not leaving till I know
he's
okay."
Alan saw how close to the edge Monica was getting and put his hand on
Sonny's shoulder.
"There isn't anything you can do, I promise I'll call
when he gets
out of surgery."
Sonny stared at Alan not moving a muscle.
Edward had had enough of this hooligan.
"You are aware young man that we can have you removed. Our family
practically owns this hospital."
No one said anything but more importantly no one contradicted Edward.
Sonny finally turned towards Carly and for the first time took in her
domineer. She was sitting in the chair beside him crouched into a
little ball, rocking back and forth. Her face was extremely pale and
her eyes had a far off look about them. Sonny took her hand in his
and gently helped her up.
"Come on, Carly let's go."
Carly looked up at Sonny, she had the look of a deer caught in
headlights. But she nodded, taking his hand and following him to the
elevator.
Sonny stopped and turned back, looking pointedly at Alan he said.
"I'll be expecting your call."
He then turned and followed Carly onto the elevator.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sonny got in the car and sat for a minute. He turned to Carly, as
surprising as it was he was concerned for her.
"Where's Bobbie, you, you shouldn't be alone."
Carly looked over at Sonny and let out a snort of laughter.
"Bobbie? You're kidding right? I have no idea where she is.
She was
supposed to be working today but she didn't come home after that.
Normally I'd say that she was with Roy, but with him away, who
knows
where she is. Probably off helping someone she isn't related
to."
Sonny looked at Carly strangely. Was that a dig? He knew he should be
offended but the weird thing was that he didn't think that Carly
was
talking about him.
"I'll take you home."
Carly turned to Sonny with fury in her eyes.
"No, I don't want to go to Bobbie's house. Lucky is
watching Lucas, I
don't need to go back there yet."
Carly sighed rubbing her eyes with her hands.
"Look Sonny, I know you hate me but right now all I want to do is
go
to the apartment with you and wait for Alan's call. I'll
leave you
alone. Just, just let me come with you."
Sonny nodded, he hadn't been looking forward to waiting by the
phone
by himself anyway.
The drove the rest of the way in silence. When they finally arrived
Carly immediately went to Jason's room and gather herself in the
quilt on his bed. She had lost so many people in her life. She had no
idea what she'd do if something happened to Jason too.
Sonny took his coat off and checked the machine for any messages. He
sighed when there were none. He turned to say something to Carly and
noticed she was nowhere to be seen. The door to Jason's bedroom
was
open though, Sonny walked into his room and saw Carly curled up in
his bed. Sonny sighed and headed for the kitchen to make some coffee,
it was going to be a long night.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Carly had fallen asleep almost immediately. Unfortunately what she
needed more than anything she was not about to get. Dead sleep hardly
ever came for Carly instead what she got were horrible nightmares of
that horrible night when she was eleven.
Carly was thrust back into a time in her life where she was happiest
and the most miserable. When Lisa her foster mom had been murdered.
Carly had gone from foster home to foster home all her life. Till she
was seven, till she was sent to live with Lisa. She had been a
wonderful woman. She taught Carly about music and life. They would go
for walks, but most importantly Lisa always heard Carly, she always
listened. Carly lived with Lisa for four years and well they were the
happiest of her life by far, they had also been the most painful.
Lisa had a boyfriend that drank and for the most part he would stay
away. They weren't even really dating, but they had been at one
time.
Sam would come over and beat up Lisa, Carly always felt so helpless
but it didn't happen that often and other than those few times a
month Sam pretty much left them alone. Carly never said anything
Lisa meant too much to her for her to risk being taken away.
When Carly turned eleven she started to blossom, her blond hair was
long and wavy and she had bright blue eyes. She was usually pretty
happy and it showed. People noticed her, something she didn't
usually
mind. However when Sam started to notice her it began to scare her.
Sam had come over one night drunk as anything. He punched Lisa in the
face before turning to Carly and smiling evilly at her. Carly knew
whatever was behind that smile it was not good. She scrambled for a
place to hide. Sam easily caught her slapping her across her face for
having the audacity to try and get away from him. Carly had been
frozen with fear and was terrified of what was about to happen when
Lisa had come up behind Sam, hitting him over the head with a pot
from the kitchen. It didn't knock Sam out but it gave Carly the
opportunity to get away. Which had been the intent. Carly ran for the
bathroom, grabbing the portable phone on the way. She had never
called the cops before but Lisa had never hit Sam back and Carly knew
it would not go over well.
She locked herself in the bathroom and dialled 911. She grimaced at
the sounds of the beating that Lisa was taking on Carly's behalf.
By the time the cops had gotten there Lisa was dead and Sam was
nearly there. Lisa had managed to grab a knife and defend herself.
The officers had had a hell of a time getting Carly to come out of
the bathroom. They finally had someone take he door off. She had been
curled up in a ball rocking back and forth. Sam had later died of his
injuries and Carly had been placed in another foster home. She stayed
there for about a year before Bobbie had found her. Carly ha been
depressed and quiet that entire year, but when Bobbie came Carly
wanted her mother to want her. She made herself act sweet and nice.
Of course it hadn't worked and Carly's wall began to grow. It
was now
a fortress.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sonny had been pretty tired himself, he had finally organized
Luke's
books. It had taken him all day but he'd done it. He had made a
full
pot of coffee and by the 2 am had drunken half of it. It didn't
appear to be doing much good though. Sonny was dozy on the couch with
phone directly in front of him. Sonny's head jerked up at the
phone
ringing. His hand automatically went to the phone. He picked it up
and then realized that the noises were in fat screams and they were
coming from Jason's room. Sonny instinctively ran to Jason's
bedroom
wondering what the hell could possibly be wrong.
Upon entering the room Sonny saw Carly who was still asleep. She was
tossing and turning and yelling like there was no tomorrow.
"NO, LISA, LISA,... LEAVE HER ALONE!!! GET AWAY FROM ME. NO, HELP
US,
HELP US!!"
Sonny instantly remembered the conversation he had overheard this
afternoon. Lucas and Carly had been talking about someone named Lisa.
Sonny went over to Carly and nudged her gently.
"Carly, wake up, you're dreaming. It's just a dream.
Carly..."
Carly bolted up right at having been woken up. She always had
nightmares but they hadn't been this bad in a long time. Carly
saw
they concerned way Sonny was looking at her and realized what must
have happened. She wiped the tears off her face and tried to cover up
as best she could.
"What do you want Corinthos?"
I will try not to breathe.
I can hold my head still with my hands at my knees.
These eyes are the eyes of the old, shiver and fold.
Sonny however knew that this time her tough persona was an act.
"Waking you up, you were screaming bloody murder."
Carly winced at Sonny's choice of words and collapsed back onto
the
bed to tired to keep up her act.
"Please just go away Sonny, I can't do this right now."
I will try not to breathe.
This decision is mine. I have lived a full life
and these are the eyes that I want you to remember.
Oh. I need something to fly over my grave again.
Sonny took in how frail Carly looked and knew he was not about to go
anywhere.
"Who's Lisa?"
Carly groaned, what the hell had she said this time? Carly was way to
tired to lie or even try to.
"She was my foster mother, she was murdered when I was
eleven."
I need something to breathe. I will try not to burden you.
I can hold these inside. I will hold my breath until all these
shivers subside,
just look in my eyes. I will try not to worry you.
Of all the things that Sonny had expected Carly to say this was the
absolute last thing he could have imagined.
"You're adopted?"
I have seen things that you will never see. Leave it to memory me.
I shudder to breathe. I want you to remember. Oh. (you will never
see)
Carly rolled over and looked at Sonny.
"Bobbie is my real mother, she gave me up for adoption when I was
born, she decided to come and find me when I was 12."
I need something to fly (something to fly) over my grave again.
(you will never see) I need something to breathe.
(something to breathe) Baby, don't shiver now. Why do you shiver
now ?
Sonny let this sink in.
"I had no idea."
(I will see things you will never see) I need something to fly
(something to fly) over my grave again.
(I will see things you will never see) I need something to breathe.
Carly rolled her eyes.
"So now that you do know, are we going to be best friends, bond
over
our mass dysfunction? Sonny, I'm tired and worried about Jason.
Just,
just leave me alone."
Oh. Oh. Oh. I will try not to worry you. I have seen things that you
will never see.
Leave it to memory me. Don't dare me to breathe.
I want you to remember. Oh. (you will never see)
Sonny bite his tongue. Every time he tried to be nice to her she bite
his head off. If she wanted to be left alone. He'd leave her
alone.
I need something to fly (something to fly) over my grave again.
(you will never see) I need something to breathe. (something to
breathe)
Sonny got up and wordlessly went back to the couch, his coffee and
waiting by the phone. Unfortunately he couldn't stop his mind
from
drifting back to what he had just learned. That and what Jason had
said, how he and Carly had similar childhoods. He hoped not, God he
hoped not.
Baby, don't shiver now. Why do you shiver now ?
Carly listened to Sonny in the living room, he kept moving around and
getting more coffee. She found the way he wouldn't be quiet
annoying
but oddly comforting. She sighed curling up into her comfort ball.
She always pushed people away, even Jason she had only let him in to
a degree and look what that had gotten her. Anyone's life that
Carly
touched just winded up getting hurt.
(I will see things you will never see) I need something to breathe.
(something to breathe - I have seen things you will never see)
I want you to remember.
