            MY

 GRANDFATHER'S

          SONG

DAVID N. HALTOM

I never met my grandfather and know very little about him.  He and my grandmother were separated before I was born.  That was not a common occurrence in those times and I don't know the reasons for the separation.

He lived in Tyler, Texas (famous for it's beautiful roses) and wrote these words of his love for his Tyler home intending them to be set to music.  They have been passed onto me and I would like to share them with you.

There is no title.  I assume he intended to give it one, but, for whatever reason, did not. As you will see by the date, it was written a very long time ago.  The sheet of paper it was written on is worn and fragile.  I keep it in a place where it cannot be handled and possibly torn.

I'm sharing it with you just as it was written on that sheet of paper.  It was typed and unknown to me if he typed it or had someone do it for him.  I have not made any corrections in form, grammar or spelling, with the exception of his name, which you will see spelled correctly in parentheses beside it.

1st

I've traveled the country over
and in all my rambling a round
no city so beautiful as Tyler
As yet I've ever found.

Chours

Beautiful, beautiful, Tyler
The heart of East Texas, I'm told
With all it's big hearted people
With a spirit more wonderful than gold.

2nd

As to Roses it has no rival
no matter where you go
you will tip your hat to Tyler
When it comes to a flower show

Chorus

3rd

I've roamed the coast of Calif.
and marveled at the beauty there
when I turn my eyes to Tyler
I find there is nothing to compare

Chorus

4th

Seats all round the courthouse
For rich and poor a like
Where questions of states and nation
are discussed from morn till night.
If you want to brighten your complexion
and make you lock just right
come to the singing every Thursday night.

Chorus

Beautiful, beautiful, Tyler
The heart of east Texas, I'm told
With all it's big hearted peoples
With a spirit more wonderful than gold.
