Ashworths of Meigs County Ohio

James Ashworth (b. 1759 d. 1844) and his wife Mary and their two sons Thomas (b 1789 d 1857) and David (b 1785 d 1846) came to the United States from County Wicklow Ireland in the summer of 1812. They lived in Elizabeth, NJ until June 1816 and then moved to Meigs Co, Ohio, eventually settling in the Flatwoods area of Chester Township.

Thomas married Nancy Blain in 1824. Five of their children died at an early age and are buried in the family plot of the cemetery in Chester. His other children included Mary Ann Ashworth, who married James Radford, Francis Ashworth, who married John Perry Wolfe, John Ashworth, and James Ashworth.

David married Francis Dixon presumably in New Jersey. Their two eldest sons, James and Robert, were born there. They had two more sons and a daughter after moving to Ohio.

David's eldest son James (b. 1812 d. 1895) never married.

Robert Ashworth (b. 1816 d. 1897) married Sarah C. Murray (b. 1815 d 1892). She is the daughter of Archibald Murray and Sarah Fulton, who married in Augusta Co, VA. Robert was a tanner. Robert and Sarah had five sons and a daughter, all of whom ventured out west in their youths. Robert H. Ashworth became a respected city official in Colorado Springs CO. Charles Ashworth was present for some of the wildest adventures of the West, made a fortune mining silver, and then lost it all. Augustus A. Ashworth was a teacher then a successful businessman, running the Ashworth Coal Company of Middletown Ohio. Kate Ashworth Hoskins was a teacher.

David's third son George Ashworth (b. 1819 d. 1879) married Martha Watkins in 1847 and had five children, Frances Amanda Ashworth Hecox, Estus Dixon Ashworth, Aurin P Ashworth (who was sheriff of Meigs Co), Margaret Ashworth, and Grazelda Ashworth.

Thomas Ashworth (b. 1821 d. ?) married Catherine Mauck. They moved to neighboring Gallia Co and had three sons, Dell, Isaac, and Dayton.
