Before we begin I just want to say thank you for visiting my site, Cody's CabinJukebox, and let you know that although I am explaining how to use this transloader to transload songs from my site, it is still stealing bandwidth...

Don't have a clue?! I'll explain shortly why you should actually learn to find the pnm strip of a song and have the real audio all to yourself! But that's later...

Anyways...

Transloading?

I told you to transload the songs and you've probably heard about transloading through friends and such, but you may have some questions, so I will attempt to explain why and how to use this GREAT thing called the transloader!!!

What?

Webtv can not store images or songs to it's hard drive or memory, (THAT is used for favorites, saved mail, etc.) so Web'ers have to move them to free disk space somewhere on the net and the Transloader allows you to upload the files or move them from anywhere on the Internet to your homepage directory.
All you need is a homepage or account at either GeoCities, Tripod, or my personal favorite Angelfire.

Why?

Until the many Transloaders were created and put online, if you owned a WebTV and you were building a homepage and needed graphics or sound files on your site, you either had to link to somebody else's files (with or without permission), or ask a friend or pay someone else to use a computer to upload for you. Linking to sites with or without permission is a problem because if the image or song is changed by the owner of that image/song then your address would not work. Not to mention a lot of homepage servers do not allow remote linking. So, it is smarter just to transload files to your own account and not have to worry about "What happened to my graphic?" or "Why won't my song play?".

How?

It is my experience to assign an F-key to the transloader... F1 works the best, because you will hardly ever change it and you can easily remember where it's at! You need the address of what you want to transload, this can be found by clicking on the graphic/song and hitting the "go to" button... then hit "show last", the address will be shown in the box.
Either write it down or copy & paste it (directions on how to do this are at the WebtvHelp section of my site.
Now, once you have found the image, song, or source of what you want to transload go to the
Transloader at Starblvd
, or you may use Mine.

They both work about the same,
Here is a line by line entry explaination...

Line 1: This is where they differ some... Mine is the URL source (file to be coped) and Starblvds' is a dumby line, it shows you where you just came from. So, for reference, the actual first line in this explaination is the URL source entry. So, enter the file address you just wrote down in the URL source box.

Line 2: This is what you want to re-call or re-name the file once it gets transloaded to your site...
NOTE: Make sure you put in the proper extention codes (i.e. ".gif", ".ram", ".wav", etc...). It makes it easier to figure out the file once it is at your directory.

Line 3: The FTP of the account. They are generally the same for all free services. The entry is just ftp.angelfire.com, or ftp.tripod.com, same with geocities. This is going to upload the file using the accounts FTP server.

Line 4: User Name. This is pretty self-explanitory, but all you do is put in the correct account name with the FTP server. Only your account username goes here, not the your page directory URL.

Line 5: Password. What password do you use to get into the corresponding account. Make sure it is correct or it won't work.

Hit the "Pilfer" or "Transload" button and give it a few seconds. Your stuff will be transloaded, although it may take a few minutes for it to be actually be put on your site directory, sometimes the servers are slow.

That's it! Everything else is optional!!

Note: You can use the sub-directory box also, this just puts the file under a certain sub-directory. You may have to go into the sub-directory to edit most of them... Also, it makes your address longer!!! (Yuk!)

Other Kinds of Files

The above explaination will work for just about every type of file you wish to transload. If you are unsure if you can tranload something or not, just ask me...

Sound Files

MIDIs and WAVs work the best when transloaded! So keep that in mind. RAMs are easily transloaded also but they may not work when they get to your page 'cause as I mentioned before, they steal bandwidth or juice from someone elses' site. If someone else has stolen that song from the same site and plays it at the same time you do, it may not work... If you are really interested in learning how to find the pnm strip of a song and guarentee that a song will play almost everytime, again, Just Ask!

HTML Files (Webpages)

This is a sticky area. You can copy webpages with the transloader, but copying a webpage and taking credit for it is, well, evil and wrong! So, be nice and honest. Besides, why would you want someone else talking for you!?

This is Incredibly Important!

Under no circumstances whatsoever transload a file with the same name as a file you already have in your homepage directory! If you do, the original file you had will be gone forever, there is no way back, it's permanently overwritten by the new one.

Un-Transloadable Things

You can't transload file directories ("Index of /mpeg" for example), because they're not files, they're lists of files. And you can't transload CGI pages either (if, when you look at a page's URL, you see /cgi-bin/ or whatever.cgi?filename, forget it). You also can't successfully transload a full page of images or sounds and have the images and sounds work, because the files aren't part of the page itself, they're separate files–transload them individually. Anything else–give it a shot and see if it works, but other than what I've listed in the above sections, there are no guarantees.

Other sites dealing with Transloading

For a greater understanding of what this is all about, read WDVL's Purloining and Pilfering to see the webmaster's point of view, and also take the time to read Netiquette at Widow's Web.

Again I hope you understand more into the exciting world of Transloading... It will open your whole Webtv experience. And truly change the way you play on the net!
