Notes:
1850: The widow Charlotte A. Ashford was residing in La Grange, Troup Co., Ga.
in 1850 with a daughter Harriett and a son, James, working as Overseer. They
were all born in South Carolina and their real estate value $3,000.00. They
were residing with the Ware family.
1850: John Gay, student, age 18, was living with the family of Benjamin H.
Cameron, in Troup County Georgia.
1860: C.E. Poythress age 24 and her daughter M.L. age 5 with her real estate
value $17,200 and personal estate value $60,000. A.C. Ware was listed his job
as M.D. with real estate value $7,000 and personal value $8,000. Residing with
them was James Crawford age 27, born N.C. and wife Mary age 22, born Ala., he
was a Druggist with real estate value 0 and personal value $4,000. Next door
lived Augustus's mother his sister Anna, and brother Wm.
Military Service: Company B 4th Georgia Infantry. Killed in battle.
During the Civil War: John T. Gay, enlisted as Pvt. 26 April 1861, elected
Junior 2nd Lt. 25 June 1862, wounded, Sharpsburg,Md. 17 Sept. 1862, elected 1st
Lt., 6 June 1863, wounded Ft. Steadman,Va. 28 April 1865, Died of wounds at
Richmond, Va. 28 April 1865, buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
Members in Co. B, were cousins: Thomas Glenn Cameron, Allen C. Gibson,
Pvt. Thaddeus B. Cameron, Sgt. Eugenius S. Ware and Pvt. Joseph J. Ware.
1860-1865: A.C. Ware served as Captain for the "Nancy Harts", a company of
women formed to defend their town during the Civil War. He drilled, marched,
and taught them marksmanship. The company was the brainchild of Nancy Hill
Morgan. Several recruits were Poythress Gay, Augusta Hill, Mrs. Brown Morgan,
Andelia Bull, Sarah Bull, Mrs.Peter Heard, Mrs.Moots, and Mrs Nancy Colquitt
Hill-Morgan.
1870: Augustus had become a Druggist with real estate value $3000 and personal
value $2,500. He had married and had two sons. His neighbors were C.E. Gay,
M.Y. Poythress, E.W.Gay,and Anna Ware,his sister all residing together in one
home. Anna Morgan, the Cameron and Screven family lived nearby. John's widow
was Caroline E. Ware-Gay.
