Below is a simplified explanation of the phonetic alphabet used on these pages. This is the Chinese phonetic alphabet, or pinyin. There are other phonetic alphabets used to express Chinese words.

I have not attempted to explain the tones of Chinese in these pages. Mandarin Chinese has five tones, and mastering these tones is by far the most difficult part of pronouncing Chinese for learners whose native language is not tonal. On these pages, the number at the end of the word expresses the tone for that word. If a word does not have a number at the end, it usually means that it has the first tone.

Like the German umlaut. This sound is often printed as 'u'. It can be differentiated by the other 'u' by the surrounding consonants.
