Shannon Moore arrived in WWE in the summer of 2002, on Stephanie McMahon's Smackdown brand. He teamed with his old friend the Hurricane and they feuded with Billy & Chuck. After pinning Jamie Noble in a tag match, Moore received a shot at his Cruiserweight Title the next week, but came up short. In the winter, Shannon joined his old friend Matt Hardy, who was now pushing a creed he called 'Mattitude.' Shannon became his first MFer, or Mattitude Follower. He continued to be Hardy's lackey, but Hardy gained another when Crash wanted to learn the ways of Mattitude. Matt put him under Moore's wing, and Crash became the first ever Moore-on. Crash left the promotion a short time later, and then Matt left Smackdown for Raw in the fall. Smackdown GM Paul Heyman decided to take it out on Moore, by putting him in the ring with the Big Show, Matt Morgan, Nathan Jones and A-Train in subsequent weeks.
