Chavo Guerrero was a mainstay in WCW for years, winning both the Cruiserweight and Tag Team championship. In early 2001, WCW was bought by Vince McMahon, and Chavo's contract was picked up. He turned up in the Summer of 2001, as Shane McMahon took control of WCW and led its stars to invade WWF programming. They were soon joined by Paul Heyman and a bunch of former ECW wrestlers, as well as ECW's new owner, Stephanie McMahon-Helmsely. Chavo had the first interpromotional match at Invasion, when he pinned Scotty 2 Hotty on Heat. He was kept on the undercard throughout the summer and fall, sometimes teaming with Justin Credible. After the Alliance lost the winner-take-all match at Survivor Series, Chavo was forced off TV with all the other Alliance members.

In the spring of 2002, Vince McMahon and Ric Flair split the WWF roster and held a draft to determine who would be exclusive to Raw and who would be exclusive to Smackdown. Chavo was drafted to Vince's Smackdown. He joined the Cruiserweight division, but couldn't take the belt from Billy Kidman or the Hurricane. In the middle of the summer, he became angry over the attention Rey Mysterio was receiving before his debut, and challenged him to his first WWE match. Rey beat Chavo, but Chavo had established himself and started teaming with his uncle Eddie. When Smackdown GM Stephanie McMahon made her own tag team titles, the Guerreros entered the tournament. They beat Rikishi and Mark Henry, but lost to Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle in the next round. They rebounded and won the tag team titles at Survivor Series against Benoit & Angle, and Rey Mysterio and Edge.

They held the belts until February, losing them to Team Angle. They competed in a Triple Threat Match for the belts at WrestleMania XIX against Team Angle and Chris Benoit and Rhyno, but didn't win. They came up short again in a rematch at Backlash, but stole the tag belts literally. They were set for a ladder match against Team Angle at Judgment Day, but Chavo sustained a bicep injury ten days before the match. He didn't return until September, where he helped Eddie beat John Cena in a parking lot brawl. They won the belts back from Team Angle, now known as the World's Greatest Tag Team, but were having their problems. They soon lost the titles to the Basham Brothers and Chavo felt that Eddie was being selfish and stealing the spotlight.
