Shetland Sheepdogs are excellent companions for young and old alike. They are extremely loyal and are above average in intelligence. While often mistaken as a "Minature Lassie", Shetland Sheepdogs are a completly unique breed. Best known as "shelties", the breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The breed originated in the Shetland Islands, a group of about 100 islands off the northern coast of Scotland. The climate of the islands is harsh with little vegetation. Because of the rugged climate, living things that inhabit the island have adapted to the climate and are typically miniature in size. Shetland ponies are most commonly known, but the islands also produce miniature sheep and cattle. The Shetland Sheepdog is believed to have evolved in much the same way. The original human inhabitants of the islands were the Picts, who gave the land its reputation of being inhabited by "pixies" or fairies.
The breed is classified by the American Kennel Club within the Herding Group, a working class. These dogs are sturdy boned and agile with a rough double coat. This breed actually herds livestock and is also capable of tracking with an eager to please nature that allows the breed to also excel in obedience. Many dogs of this breed who have the instinct to herd and if not allowed to do so on a farm, will often take up herding children as they play or at least letting a parent know something is amiss with children as Shelties tend to be very aware of property boundaries and have an uncanny ability to sense when something is not as it should be.
The breed standard for size is between 13 and 16 inches with average weights between 15 and 25 pounds respectively. This makes the Breed an excellent choice for an apartment as well as a suburban house with a yard. Due to the working nature of the dog, they are also quite at home on a farm. The breed has a variety of accepted colors including Sable (similar to Lassie), Tri (consisting of black, white and tan), BiBlack (black and white) Blue Merle (a grayish blue, white and tan), and BiBlue (a grayish blue and white.) Care must be taken in mixing the colors in breeding as certain combinations result in unacceptable colors.
Note: For more information and before considering the purchase of a Shetland Sheepdog, I would suggest that you borrow a copy of "Sheltie Talk", by McKinney and Rieseberg, from you public library and investigate the breed, it's origins and specifications.

Classic Games on pogo.com
A special note about pogo.com!
pogo.com has undergone some major changes lately. Originally, TEN (the Total Entertainment Network) was a pay to play site. Before TEN stopped the service in October of 1999 they started "UltraLite" in August of 1998. The UltraLite (know known as pogo.com) offers Classic Games and is THE Best place on the web to play those family favorites! I became a guide on the site in August of 1998, and a MagnaGuide (a supervisor of guides) in November of 1998. It was great fun helping new players and guides who were the primary helpers to new players. In 1999, the site changed it's name to pogo.com but everything else remained the same. In March of 2001, EA.com bought pogo.com. On May 31, 2001, EA.com did away with the volunteer guide service and now has hired an outsource to manage player issues. While I will miss being a guide on the site, at this time, the games are still free and it is a great place to play all kinds of games. Some games have cash prizes, some allow you to collect "tokens" which can be redeemed for cash drawings, and some just allow you to play Classic Games while chatting on the net! Some of the games offered are Bridge, Euchre, Spades, Hearts, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Cribbage,
Dominoes, Sweet Tooth, Roulette, BlackJack, Poppit, Video Poker, Turbo21, Keno and Video Slots. There are also Bingo games and Trivia games as well as a Lottery. You play in real time with lots of nice folks. The games are easy to play, easy to learn and do not require any downloads. There are even single player games including crosswords, word searches jumbles, Void and Overflow. (JAVA enable browser is needed.)
