- Beth,
gasped when she found a sharp razor blade tucked under the arm
of the chair with her finger tips she had
- almost cut herself on it.
Heather hadn’t returned so she began to saw at the ropes
at her wrists, one free she had to
- get the rest free, and she
did she could hear Heather still running her trap on the phone
so she looked around the
- room she was in and saw the
bat in the corner. She slowly went over to it and then
held it in her hand as she moved
- through the house looking
for Heather, but she had stopped chatterring so she couldn’t
hear where she was any
- more.
- “Why
don’t you put that bat down hon.” Heather said from behind
her, she turned and saw the gun trained
- on her, if she dared she could
swing the bat and knock the gun free. Then she thought
of her husband Lance and
- knew that she dared, she dared
a lot.
- “Sure,
let me lay it down nice and gentle.” She said bringing
her left foot forward a little so she could crouch
- just before she placed her
other hand on the bat and swung upwards catching Heather in
the ribs. The gun flew out
- of her hand as she brought
her hands up to her sides and went to her knees. “Now
Doll is it?” She said
- sarcastically as she hit Heather
over the back with the bat then went after the gun.
- “Oh
you going to shoot me now?” Heather said catching her
breath as Beth motioned for her to stand up,
- she did her best and was soon
tied to the same chair Beth had been tied to.
- “Marvin
have a cell phone?” Beth said.
- “He
might, you are a little bitch you know that!” Heather
said.
- “I
need to make a call do you mind?” Beth said gabbing her
cellular out of her jean pocket.
- “Who
you calling, call the cops I dare you they see me tied up like
I am you will go to jail for taking me
- hostage.” She said,
she taunted Beth so much that Beth reached over and backhanded
her across the mouth then
- found the duct tape and taped
her mouth shut.
- “Come
on, Kev! Lord how is everyone?” She asked.
- “Fine,
why do you sound upset?” He asked, reception was breaking
up there must not be a tower close by.
- “Marvin
and Joey have Lance and they are looking for you.” She
said, Heather’s eyes brightened when she
- finally found out who else
was with the two they were looking for.
- “Where
are you?” Kev asked.
- “Marvin’s,
got Joey’s wife Heather with me too. Long story I’ll share
later. What should I do?” She
- asked.
- “Get
the hell out of there.” Kevin said.
- “And
go where? They find me gone they’ll kill Lance.” She
said.
- “Then
take insurance.” Kev said.
- “Insur-,
Doll, alright where am I going?” She asked.
- “Got
a map?” He asked.
- “Yeah.”
She said.
- “Exit
sixty six left at the bottom keep following the road.” He
said.
- “How
long of a drive?” She asked.
- “About
three hours to the exit and another hour after that.” Kev
said and she nodded as she wrote down
- the instructions on her little
note pad she kept in her back pocket. “Don’t leave a note
or anything.” He said.
- “Sure,
come on Doll.” She said untying Heather’s hands and tying
them together behind her back and then
- shoving her towards the door
and then to what she assumed was Joey’s vehicle. “Get
in and where are the keys?”
- She said Heather nodded to
the visor and Beth found them. She shoved Heather into
the back of the SUV after
- making sure the entire back
was empty of anything Heather could use to get the upper hand
again, then shoved her
- into it. She put all
the tire irons up on the front floor board and they were off.
She followed the directions and the
- drive seemed like forever,
she could hear Heather wrestling around in the back and checked
on her every so often in
- the mirror. The exit
was the next right and then she had to go left she was
almost there, Heather had been quiet for
- almost an hour so she breathed
a little easier but that didn’t stop her from checking. She
saw Kev outside a cabin
- tucked back into the woods
and sighed in relief as she pulled the SUV behind the cabin
where he told her to and
- then he came to the driver’s
door.
- “She’s
in the back.” Beth said and Kev nodded and went to get
her.
- “Come
on.” Kev said dragging her out of the vehicle and into
the cabin to where Jordan and Christina sat at
- the table eating dinner. It
was almost midnight now. “Sit!” He said and she
had no choice but to do as she was
- told as she was tied to the
chair. They were cruel and shoved her and the chair into
a small room with no windows
- then shut the door, but thankfully
they turned a chain of lights on that lit the room a little
but there was nothing in
- there she could use even if
she got her hands on them.
- “Oh
my god are you alright?” Christina said as Beth stood
at the bathroom mirror dabbing at the dried
- blood on her face from where
the gun had struck her with a wet wash cloth.
- “Nothing
a little time wont fix, I just hope Lance is alright.” She
said.
- “He’ll
be fine.” She said hoping to be sure she was right.
- “He
better be fine.” She said.
-
- “Did
we ever finish that liscense plate number from that case where
the woman was dumped in the ocean
- and found?” Detective
Charlie Green asked his associate Patrick Yen.
- “Yeah,
C N T 5 5 7 E.” He said, they were sitting in their car
at a stake out.
- “Oh
really?” He asked, pointing to the cadi sitting at the
light with the plate number Patrick had blurted out.
- “Let’s
go.” Patrick said, their replacements would be there any
second.
- “Alright.”
He said pulling out of the parking spot and radioing the
discovery in and then as they began to
- move forward after the light
changed they turned their lights on. Then found themselves
in a chase. “Call in a
- chase.” Charlie said
and Patrick picked up the radio.
- “Yen
to home.” He said.
- “This
is home go ahead.” The woman’s voice came across the line.
- “We
are in an active pursuit of the car in the attempted murder
case a few months back, we went to pull
- them over for a brake
light out and they initiated the chase over.” Yen said.
- “Affirmative,
chopper is being dispatched what is your twenty.” The
woman said.
- “North
on Navarre, between Corbis and Gentry speeds exceed one hundred.”
He said.
- “And
we have sight.” The pilot from the chopper said as they
zeroed in on the car....
-
- “Honey
look at this.” Kris said as she held her son, when he
had been born almost eight months ago he had
- been a little over twelve
pounds.
- “What?”
Jonathan said, he had been trying to call his brother
for two days now and Jordan hadn’t even
- called him back.
- “A
chase, the police have been chasing someone for about ten minutes
now and the guy is hell bent on
- getting away.” She said,
he sat down and watched as the news unfolded on the news.
- “Did
they say who they were chasing?” Jonathan said.
- “No,
just they tried to pull him over and boom he sped off.” She
said.
- “Has
Jordan called at all?” He asked.
- “No,
not at all are you getting worried?” She asked.
- “Yeah,
sort of. I know he was going to call that number finally
to see if Christina would remember anything
- and what not.” He said.
- “Why
don’t you drive over to his house and check things out.” She
said and he nodded, the chase was well
- away from where he had to
go so he figured it wouldn’t even involve him.
- “Alright,
I’ll put the chase up on the radio and steer clear.” He
said and she nodded.
- “Good.”
She said. “I love you.” She said as he picked up
their son Jason and gave him a hug and a kiss.
- “I
love you too, and I love you kiddo.” He said giving their
son back to her and grabbing his keys.
- He
drove safely there and turned into the driveway of Jordan’s
house and his eyes bugged out and his jaw
- dropped, there were bullet
holes everywhere, and Jordan’s car was missing. He parked
and slowly got out, the
- cops hadn’t been here because
there was no police tape across the door or anything so he went
up to the door and
- found it locked. He
dug into his pocket and found the spare key and opened the door
afraid of what he might find,
- he slowly walked through the
house, heaving a sigh of relief when he didn’t find his brother
or Christina at all. He
- then found the missing poster
and looked at the address, he had to see if there was anything
there that could tell him
- what had happened so he locked
the house back up and left to find this other house. He
pulled up to the house and
- checked it out, there was
nothing wrong with it so he pulled into the driveway and began
looking around, then he
- peeked through the windows
in the top of the garage door and saw his brother’s car.
- “What
the fuck!” He said, then turned around when a car pulled
into the driveway.
- “Can
we help you?” The officer asked.
- “My
brother has been missing for a couple days, I found this in
his house which was apparently shot up so I
- came here and his car is in
the garage.” He said.
- “Why
don’t you take us to your brother’s house.” One officer
said.
- “Gladly.”
Jonathan said, getting into his car and then drove slowly
so the officers could follow. As soon as
- they pulled in the officer’s
called it in and began looking around.
- “And
you say you havn’t had contact for how long?” The officer
asked.
- “Almost
two days, there isn’t much I can tell you that I havn’t
already.” Jonathan said and he was
- dismissed, he left Jordan’s
place and went home, he made it safely to learn from his wife
that their son was sleeping
- and that the chase had ended
in a violent way, the car that they had been chasing had rolled
over in a ditch and
- emergency crews were on scene
now.
- “Let
me see if Jordan has his cel on him.” He said, dialing
the cellular number.
- “Hello?”
Jordan said, the signal sucked but it was something.
- “Where
the hell are you? I just went by your house there are
so many bullet holes in the front walls, and
- your car was gone talk to
me here.” Jonathan said.
- “Christina
remembers a lot now, her ex found us at my place and tried to
kill us.” Jordan said.
- “Are
you alright?” Jonathan asked.
- “For
the most part.” Jordan said wincing when a muscle in his
right shoulder twitched.
- “What
the hell is that supposed to mean, for the most part?” Jonathan
asked.
- “I
don’t want to worry you.” Jordan said.
- “Worry?
You should have thought to call me.” Jonathan said.
- “I
was shot Jonathan!” Jordan said.
- “What?
What hospital are you at?” He asked.
- “I’m
not.” Jordan said.
- “What?”
Jonathan said, pissed at his brother now for not getting medical
care like he should have.
- “I’m
fine, Beth’s brother Kev is a doctor and fixed me up on the
run. Beth is safe, Christina is safe, Kev is
- safe but Beth’s husband Lance
is with the ex. We do have a bargaining chip though.”
Jordan said.
- “Oh
yeah?” Jonathan asked.
- “Marvin’s
cousin’s wife. Heather I believe her name is don’t really
know.” He said.
- “Shit
Jay, what kind of car are they in?” He asked as
he sat down infront of the television once more to
- actually watch the news that
was still unravelling.
- “A
large dark blue cadillac, should have only three p-people in
it. Talk to Kev.” Jordan said passing off the
- phone, he had been laying
on the couch resting but he was getting tired again so he handed
the phone off.
- “What
happened to Jordan?” Jonathan asked.
- “Got
tired, needs his rest. I’m Kev.” He said.
- “You
know I think the car that you all are running from was just
in a police chase and rolled into the ditch.”
- Jonathan said.
- “Are
you positive?” Kev said.
- “Almost,
wait they just flashed on the car again as they pulled the last
guy out. They announced that two are
- dead the third is in critical
and being transported to the nearest trauma center.” Jonathan
said.
- “Can
you call the police and ask if there was a person named Lance
in that car?” Kev said, his voice
- hushed.
- “Yeah,
and I’ll call you back.” Jonathan said.
- “Alright.”
Kev said, going to the closet where they were holding
Heather. “Looks like there has been an
- accident.” Kev said,
pulling the chair out into the middle of the room and pulling
the layers of tape off her mouth.
- “What
do you mean?” She asked.
- “Just
wait.” Kev said. “And if you speak again I’ll tape
your mouth shut again.” He said and she nodded,
- as the phone rang again. “Hello?”
He said.
- “Yeah,
me again. Yes Lance was in the car, he is the one that
lived, ah Marvin Cousiano and Joe are
- dead.” He said.
- “Joe
who is dead?” Kev said.
- “Joseph
McIntyre is dead.” Jonathan said, unaware that Kev had
put the phone up to Heather’s ear.
- “Thank
you.” Kev said hanging up she was melting down crying
right now, screaming as she did so. “I can
- untie you now without a fight?”
He asked and she nodded, so he untied her and she moved
away from him and
- went into the bathroom to
shrink to the floor in mourning. “Heather, we wont tell
any one your involvment with this
- if you don’t tell anyone we
brought you up here.” He said and she agreed.....
-
- “Lance!”
Beth said as she walked into the hospital room the next
day.
- “Baby.”
He said softly as she came over to the bed, every one
was safe now.
- “Oh
I love you.” She said leaning down and placing a small
kiss on his forehead.
- “I
love you.” He whispered.
- “Everything
is alright now.” She said.
- “How’s
that?” He asked, he had been in the back seat which hadn’t
been crushed like the front had so he
- had virtually been left unharmed
save for a few injuries even though they had taken him captive
they had buckled him
- in.
- “Marvin
and Joey are dead, you were the only one to survive the accident.
Heather went mad and is in the
- mental ward at city hospital
downtown for observation, they say that unless she has someone
to vouch for her and
- take her in she is headed
for Gracefull Hills. I am thinking of helping her out,
she didn’t do anything really and her
- husband died but I don’t know
if she would want the help.” She said.
- “You
can offer.” Lance said.
- “I
mean I feel bad that he died because Marvin wanted us dead.”
She said and he nodded, this was his
- Beth he loved.
- “How
is Jordan?” He asked.
- “They
checked him over and released him.” She said, Christina
had gone back to Jordan’s home with him
- and she had to wonder why
her friend would do that....
-
- “How
are you?” She asked as she brought him something to eat,
he was sitting in the recliner in the living
- room resting like he was supposed
to be doing.
- “Better,
I know I know I am supposed to rest but I feel I need to be
up.” He said.
- “Well
we need to talk anyway.” She said.
- “About?”
He asked.
- “Me,
you, the baby?” She offered.
- “Are
you going to live with me?” He asked.
- “Even
when we were fighting just before Marvin showed up you were
caring and considerate, I know you
- started this whole thing with
me wrong but I need for you to know that I forgive you. I
have thought about what you
- told me when you found me,
how you found me that is, if it weren’t for you taking me in
as your girlfriend I would
- have been put in the nearest
shelter somewhere and never would have known what it felt like
to be loved.” She
- said.
- “Wow,
I thought you were going to tell me you were leaving.” He
admitted.
- “Even
if I wanted to I couldn’t leave you.” She said.
- “Why?”
He asked.
- “Because
I love you.” She said, she finally admitted those three
tiny words that meant everything to
- everyone.
- “I
love you too Christina.” He said.
- “I
feel silly.” She said smiling and he smiled as well. “You
know I never asked how you knew my name
- before I remembered everything.”
She said, then laughed when he put his index finger under
the necklace that said
- her name.
- “I
went on the basis that you probably wouldn’t be wearing a necklace
with another woman’s name on it.”
- He said and she laughed again,
they were good for each other.
- “I
have an appointment with the baby doctor tomorrow.” She
said.
- “You’d
need to drive but I am going too.” He said.
- “But
your shoulder the doctor’s say you need rest.” She said.
- “I
need to stretch my legs some time, and I believe that this is
as good of an excuse as any.” Jordan said,
- she hesitantly nodded...
-
- “My
Joey, my Joey, my Joey......” Heather chanted as she rocked
back and forth in her padded cell at the
- city hospital before they
would transfer her to Gracefull Hills.
- “And
that’s all she does?” Beth asked.
- “Pretty
much, oh she’ll eat but with persuasion. The doctors have
suspended the voucher program she is
- going straight to Gracefull
Hills, She can’t be out just yet.” The nurse said
to Beth.
- “Can
I go in there?” She asked.
- “I
suppose so, if you need help call.” She said and Beth
nodded as she was let into the room.
- “Heather?”
Beth said and Heather stopped her chanting and looked
up at her.
- “What
are you doing here?” She asked.
- “I
was going to vouch for you and get you our of here, but they
had suspended that idea for you because of
- your behavior.” She
said.
- “You
helped put me here.” She said, she was barefoot and was
in a set of hospital pajamas.
- “No,
honey I didn’t remember the circumstances?” She said.
- “I
want my Joey!” Heather said.
- “Unfortunately
he’s not coming back, but I can help if you let me.” She
said, Heather shook her head and
- sat back down.
- “If
you want to help get me home.” She said.
- “I
can try but if you keep rocking and chanting it isn’t going
to get you anywhere.” Lance had talked her
- into trying to help the woman
because in all essance she had done nothing wrong, she hadn’t
fired a gun at them all
- she had done was assist in
keeping Beth hostage but even that failed.
- “I
can try.” Heather said, they would medicate her soon and
she knew it.
- “I’ll
go speak with the doctor, no rocking, no chanting just sit.”
She said and the woman nodded, She laid
- down on the mat they
had given her to sleep on and just laid still.
- “You
want me to release her to you anyway?” The doctor said
about twenty minutes later.
- “Yes,
all she needs it counselling not medication and locked up. She
lost her husband and her way of life
- she needs help to change all
that but she can’t get it here.” Beth said and the doctor
finally nodded.
- “She
has no clothes, they didn’t bring any with her from downstairs.
Alright, she can go today with you but
- if you have any problems
with her bring her back.” He said and Beth nodded, Lance
would be there to help and
- they had already fitted a
room with safety features just in case Heather went nuts on
them.
- “Yes
sir, and it is warm out she can go like she is.” She said
and the doctor nodded and gave the orders as
- Beth went down to pull the
car around. It would take a lot but she would try her
best to help her, that was what
- god put her there for was
to help.
- “Alright
Heather let’s go honey.” The nurse said and Heather obeyed,
they hadn’t medicated her like she
- had thought were they transferring
her?
- “Oh
Mrs. Bass.” The doctor said just before they were about
to pull out.
- “Yes?”
She said.
- “Her
prescriptions, only give her the medicine at night or if she
acts up.” He said and she nodded and took
- the giant stack of precriptions.
- “Thank
you.” She said and they were off.
- “So
they let me go with you?” She asked as they drove along
the streets.
- “Do
you want help or not?” She asked and Heather nodded.
- “Where
am I going to live?” She asked.
