Oval Place Mat measures 15 X 19 1/2 inches; Round Place Mat measures 14 1/2 inches in diameter.

OVAL PLACE MAT -- First Hairpin Lace Section . . . With White, make a strip of hairpin lace, having 70 loops on each side.  Sew hairpin lace together, being careful not to twist.

CENTER . . .  Keeping the twist in all loops, attach Skipper Blue through any 7 loops on inner side, sc in same place, (ch 3, sc through next 2 loops) 14 times; ch 3, sc through next 7 loops, ch 3, sc through next 2 loops, (ch 1, sl st in ch-3 sp between next 2 groups of opposite 2 loops, ch 1, sc through next 2 loops on side in work) 13 times; ch 3.  Join to first sc.  Break off. Now work around outer edge as follows:

1st rnd:  Still keeping the twist in all loops, attach White to center loop opposite group of 7 loops, sc in same loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 7 times; (ch 3, sc through next 2 loop) 10 times; (ch 3, sc in next loop) 15 times; (ch 3, sc through next 2 loops) 10 times; (ch 3, sc in next loop) 7 times; ch 3.  Join and break off (50 loops).

2nd rnd:  Attach Skipper Blue to any loop, ch 7, * tr in next loop, ch 3.  Repeat from * around.  Join to 4th ch of ch-7 (50 sps).  Break off.

SECOND HAIRPIN LACE SECTION . . .  With White make a strip of hairpin lace, having 100 loops on each side.  Sew hairpin lace together.

Now work around inner edge as follows:

1st rnd:  Attach White to any loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.   Join and break off (100 loops).

2nd rnd:  Attach Skipper Blue to any ch-3 loop, ch 4, tr in next loop, * ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make tr in each of next 2 loops, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (joint-tr made)  Repeat from * around.  Join (50 sps).

Now work around outer edge as follows: 1st rnd:  Attach White through any 2 loops, sc in same place, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 20 times; (ch 3, sc through next 2 loops) 15 times.  Complete other end and side of oval to correspond.  Join and break off (70 loops).

2nd rnd:  Ch 8 and work as for 2nd rnd of First Section, making ch-4 sps instead of ch-3 (70 sps).

Joining of Sections:  Lay Second Section over First Section, centering oval ends, attach white to any sp on First Section, ch 3 sl st in corresponding sp on Second Section, * ch 3, sl st in next sp on First Section ch 3, sl st in next sp on Second Section.  Repeat from * around.  Join.

THIRD HAIRPIN LACE SECTION . . . With White make a strip of hairpin lace, having 140 loops on each side.  Sew hairpin lace together.

Work around inner edge as follows:

1st and 2nd rnd:  Work as for 1st and 2nd rnds on inner edge of Second Section, making ch-4 sps instead of ch-3 sps on last rnd (70 sps).

Work around outer edge as follows:

1st rnd:  Attach White through any 2 loops, sc in same place, (ch 3, sc in next loop) 32 times; (ch 3, sc through next 2 loops) 19 times.  Complete other end and side of oval to correspond.  Join and break off (102 loops).

2nd rnd:  Attach Skipper Blue to any ch-3loop, sc in same place, * ch 5, sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.  Join.

3rd and 4th rnds:  Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.  Join.  Break off at end of 4th rnd.  Join this section to Second Section in same way as Second Section was joined to First Section.

EDGING . . . 1st rnd:  Attach White to any loop, sc in same loop, *ch 7, sc in next loop, ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make 3 tr in next loop, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), ch 4, sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.  Join.

2nd rnd:  Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 5, in tip of next cluster make (cluster, ch 5) 3 times; sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.  Join and break off.

ROUND PLACE MATT -- First Hairpin Lace Section . . . With White make a strip of hairpin lace, having 48 loops on each side.  Sew hairpin lace together.

CENTER . . . 1st rnd:  Keeping the twist in all loops, attach White through any 2 loops on inner edge, sc in same place, * ch 3, sc through next 2 loops.  Repeat from * around.  Join and break off.

2nd rnd:  Attach Skipper Blue to any ch-3 loop, ch 4, tr in next loop and in each loop around.  Join to top of ch-4.

3rd rnd:  Ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make tr in next 3 tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), *ch 1, make 4-tr cluster over next 4 tr.  Repeat from * around.  Join and break off.

Now work around outer edge as follows:

1st rnd:  Keeping the twist in all loops, attach White to any loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop.  Repeat from * around.  Join and break off.

2nd rnd:  Work as for 2nd rnd of First Section on Oval Place Mat (48 sps).

SECOND HAIRPIN LACE SECTION . . . With White make a strip of hairpin lace having 96 loops on each side.  Sew center of hairpin lace together.

Now work around inner edge as follows:

1st and 2nd rnds:  Work as for 1st and 2nd inner rnds of Second Section on Oval Place Mat.

Now work around outer edge as follows:

1st rnd:  Work as for 1st rnd of outer edge of First Section.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th rnds:  Work as for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rnds of Third Section of Oval Place Mat.
