What is a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats diseases of the skin, hair and nails. This may require the use of topical or internal medications. Some dermatologic conditions require in-office surgery for diagnosis or treatment. In addition to the treatment of skin disease, dermatologists also use a variety of treatment methods to improve your appearance and to correct aging skin.

Common Skin Conditions and Their Treatment

Acne

Pimples, although not considered a medically serious problem, can impair one’s appearance and self-image, and in more serious cases cause permanent scarring of the skin. Although many cases of acne are seen in young people, there are a large number of adults who suffer from acne. There are many different therapies available for the treatment of acne, and these treatments are oriented toward preventing flare-ups and minimizing scarring. Each case of acne is different which is why we individually tailor each treatment program.

Warts

Warts are a very common problem. They are caused by a viral infection, and although seen most frequently on the hands and feet, can appear anywhere on the body. They are harmless but can be difficult to treat. We offer the latest treatments, which are relatively painless and leave little or no scarring.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common skin disease that appears as large red patches covered with scales. Depending on its severity and location, psoriasis can be treated in a variety of ways. There are many topical medications available that aid in its treatment. Other treatment options including oral medication and ultraviolet light are used for more extensive cases.

Eczema

Eczema is a general term that means a rash that is itchy. Eczema can be caused by allergic reactions to something we come into contact with. If there is a family history of allergies, this condition can be inherited. Eczema can be treated very effectively by avoiding certain substances, and by the use of topical and oral medications.

Fungal Infections

Fungal infections commonly referred to as "ringworm," can occur anywhere on the skin surface. When small areas are effected they can usually be treated with topical anti-fungal medications alone. For larger areas or infections involving the hair or nails, internal medications may be necessary. New internal anti-fungal agents are very safe, fast acting and stronger than those used in the past.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and is also the easiest to treat. A very important part of lifesaving cancer technology is the early detection and surgical cure of skin cancer. We treat most major skin cancers with in office surgery.

Moles, Cysts and Other Serious Lesions

Special surgical procedures are available for the treatment and removal of moles, cysts and other types of skin lesions. In many cases these can be removed with simple, painless in office surgery.

Skin Improvement Procedures

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Cosmetic skin resurfacing reduces wrinkles quickly and permanently without scalpels or stiches. The outer layers of skin are removed with a CO2 laser beam and the healing process results in a firmer and smoother appearance. Patients are treated in the doctor’s office under local anesthetic.

Collagen & Autologous Fat

Collagen injections are a safe and effective way of reducing facial wrinkles or augmenting one’s lip line. These injections can also be used to reduce the appearance of facial acne scars. Autologous fat grafts are the movement of one’s own fat from one area of the body to another. This can more permanently correct wrinkles, scars and undesirable furrows in the skin.

Chemical Peels

Small facial imperfections, discoloration, lines and even deep wrinkles can be eliminated with mild, moderate or deep chemical peels.

Large Varicose and Spider Veins

Thousands of patients have been successfully treated for their varicose and spider veins using injection sclerotherapy, a relatively painless in-office procedure using an FDA approved solution. This treatment rids one of the pain and unsightliness of varicose and spider veins. For large varicose veins a quick in office mirco-surgical phlebectomy procedure is available.

Retin-A and Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Both Retin-A and Alpha Hydroxy acids are substances which when applied to the skin over time can help soften fine wrinkles, lessen skin discoloration and improve overall skin texture.
