"THRICE IN A LIFETIME"

August 1, 1997

J.R. went for a midnight snack and found Sue Ellen in the kitchen. He told her that Mandy told him he'd eventually tire of Sue Ellen, and he told Sue Ellen that normally she was right. But now he realized how much he'd taken her for granted all these years and, like she has over and over again for the past eight seasons, Sue Ellen fell for it and kissed him. Sue Ellen went for a walk in the park with Pam the next day to tell her that she was in love with J.R. again, and was going back to him. Pam protested, but Sue Ellen knew that this time, J.R. really meant it. She said there was a magic between them, and there always had been. (The magic was that she hadn't killed him yet.) Later on, J.R. read John Ross to sleep and met Sue Ellen in the hall. She said there was something she needed to talk about, but J.R. said it would have to wait till morning. Sue Ellen kissed him, and retired to her room.

Clayton hired a new ranchhand, an older man named Ben Stivers, to oversee their new ranching project. Ben was originally from Dallas, but had worked a lot in Kentucky recently. Jack argued that Ben was too old, but Clayton took it personally and Jack stormed off in a huff. Clayton began telling Ben about Miss Ellie and how they were married, and later on introduced the two. Ben seemed a bit wistful/choked up during the meeting, and quickly went on his way.

Marilee went to Cliff and told him that J.R. had screwed her over again, and did he still want to start that consortium. Cliff was pleased as punch, but Jamie was outraged and told Cliff that she was sick of his fighting J.R. After all, she'd already solved the feud by nicely asking J.R. to stop. This made Cliff upset, he yelled at her, and she left in tears. Pam yelled at Cliff later, telling him "She went to J.R. knowing that she could be humiliated, and the irony of it is he didn't humiliate her--you did!", and then she stormed out. He agreed to apologize, and went home and found Jamie in the kitchen. After she poured wine down his pants, he did apologize and promised that his feud with J.R. was over, and that if he ever started up again, she had the right to walk out on him. They then kissed and made up, and decided to see if that "wine really tastes as good as it felt".

Ray and Donna showed the Southfork gang (ie--John Ross, Charlie, and Tony) what had been done on their new house, and the kids marvelled at a room looking out over the pond. Ray and Donna said it would be Tony's room, if he would have it. Tony accepted, and Ray and Donna went back to the adoption agency to tell Nan that Tony agreed to live with them. Nan said that was too bad, because the review board denied their application for the trivial reason that Ray had pulled the plug on his cousin-turned-nephew's life support. Ray remarked that now that had to find some other way to adopt Tony, or tell him that they had to break a promise they never really had the right to make in the first place.

Angelica went to a nutcase who rambled on for an entire scene about American values and so-forth while building a suitcase bomb for her. Later, she made an Angeli-call--one of her vague, mysterious phone calls to some sinister person arranging to meet to talk about something very important.

Matt returned to Dallas to say sorry to Pam for wasting millions of dollars worth of her money on a mine which collapsed just after striking emeralds. But that was okay, she told him. The emeralds weren't what counted. What counted was that Bobby believed in him, and he succeeded, and she believed in him, too. Before leaving the series (and this stupid storyline designed solely so Victoria Principal could leave the show and get plastic surgery) forever, he punched J.R. and told him thanks for showing him the worst of himself, and that he could rise above it (despite never telling Pam the truth about his deal with J.R.).
