CHRISTOPHER STREET AND THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY
POINT THANK YOU ON HERO HIGHWAY
NEW YORKERS GIVE THANKS TO THE WORKERS

In the West Village, a mile and a half north of ground zero, on the corner of Christopher Street and the West Side Highway, at every hour of every day there are people there cheering on the workers as they make their way to and from lower Manhattan.

Their efforts are, in a sense, intangable and fleeting but it means so much to the workers to know that New York is with them. This continued display of support brings new life and hope to the tired crews. Saying THANK YOU doesn't last more than a moment but it's effect can last a lifetime.

They come from diverse backgrounds and different neighborhoods, some originally from other countries. What they have in common was a wish and a need to give support to those who are working so hard and giving so very much. To let them know that their work, their struggle, is in some way shared or at least appreciated by us all.

Experience the sounds of POINT THANK YOU with this recording
that puts you right in the center of the crowd on HERO HIGHWAY.

No one organized this expression of gratitude and goodwill. It just started happening on September 11th. and has kept on happening. People show up and put in a few hours everyday. They've brought signs and flags which are kept at the base of the light pole for anyone to use. They shared their snacks and their positive energy with each other, moving from one side of the median to the other as traffic comes by. Trucks and cars slow up to thank these people for their continued support and sometimes even stop to talk. Mostly it's a quick honk or chirps and squawks from sirens with big smiles and waves.

NYPD, FDNY, Port Authority, Rescue, Ambulance, Military, City Workers, Iron Workers, Verizon and Con Ed personnel and numerous Volunteers as well as political dignitaries all travel to the site of the World Trade Center via the West Side Highway. Other corners where people gathered to cheer were, sadly, empty within weeks of the tragedy but Christopher Street has remained a strong and magnetic center for people who want to show their gratitude and give something back to the tireless workers.

From dawn 'til dusk,

in rain or shine,

and through the night,

they've been there to let the workers know
they aren't taken for granted.

THANK YOU ALL!
