This is the latest thing to hit the internet since the "get paid to surf" websites a few years ago. A few new sites based on a very simple and old idea.
This type of program almost certainly isn't a dodgy pyramid scheme; it's a new form of online marketing supported by companies like eBay, AOL and Columbia House. The main theme is that the websites promise free gifts to anyone who signs up for a few various online promotions and gets five, eight, or ten others to do the same.
Everyone is given a choice of 10 different offers, including a 45-day trial of AOL and a two-week trial of Ancestry.com's genealogy service. Typically, the offers are free and easily canceled. After you are credited for siging up for the free services, you are credited and your free gift is sent.
The network hosting this new internet craze is called Gratis Internet. Advertisers contact the company to advertise to people on their sites and include their promotions to all the subscribers. In return, the company makes money from the advertisers and offers it's participants a choice of a free gift depending on the site they sign up to.
Currently, the network is offering six different sites. Each site offers a free gift, and each site requires a different ammount of people to complete the offers.
