Candle Burning Tips
~ Please read these instructions before lighting your candle ~
 OUR CANDLE WICKS ARE LEAD FREE.
We only use Zinc or cotton cored wicks in our candles.
Candle care out of the box: When your package arrives please be sure to allow your candles to reach room temperature before you light them. If glass jars are too cold you run the risk of cracking the glass and if the jars are too warm the wax will be too soft and run the risk of tunneling the candle.
Remember…. Room temperature = Happy candles.
1. Burn candle until wax melts evenly across the container not exceeding 4 hours per burn.
2. Keep both wicks lit at all times when you are burning the candle.
3. Keep wicks centered and trimmed to avoid excessive flame or smoke.
4. Burn candle on a flat level surface away from drafts. If the candle flame flickers, check for drafts, the flame should be still at all times.
5. If your wick smokes or the flame is too high, it's telling you to trim the wick shorter. Pinch the wick with your fingers and discard the trimming. Wick trimmers or nail clippers work well to cut the wick to the precise height. Example of recommended height for a wick = ~l~ (¼ of an inch.)
6. Never leave candle within a child’s or pets reach.
7. Always burn a candle within sight, never leave unattended.
8. Discontinue use when about a 1/2 of an inch remains in the container.
Never burn wax to the very bottom of the candle, this may cause damage to your furniture.
It is recommended that you always burn any type of candle on a heat resistant surface.
9. Please remember that same rules that apply with fire apply to a candle. Do not burn near something that could catch fire.
10. Never move a lit candle, wax will be hot and could cause injury.
11. If a mushroom forms on your wick, blow out the candle and cut it off and relight the candle.
*The mushroom ball comes from excess scent
12. To properly extinguish a candle use a wick dipper.
Use the metal dipper to dip the wick into the liquid wax melt pool, and then straighten the wick back up.
Using a wick dipper insures ~ No smoking after the flame is extinguished,no wax splatter and coats the wick with wax so it burns cleaner and lasts longer with next lighting.
Soy instruction
All of the above instructions apply to the Spotted Hog 100 % soy line of candles.
We do recommend that you allow the soy candles to sit for about a week or so before you burn them to allow the candle to cure for optimal throw.
The soy line is made with 100% natural woven cotton fiber wicks that are designed to break at the perfect height for trimming. Upon each re lighting, break the wick with your fingers and discard the trimmings. Light the candle and enjoy.
Always burn the candle until the entire top surface liquefies before you blow out the candle. We also recommend that you use a wick dipper to extinguish the candle to avoid afterglow and smoking of the wicks and to make it easier to relight the candle.
Trouble shooting
Q. I cut my wicks too short and my flame is too low.
A. If in the event that you cut the wicks too short, do not panic. Sometimes it happens. Most of instances the candle will “right its self” after buring for a little while.
If the candle tunnels as a result, simply scoop out the wax that did not melt and create a level surface again. Do not waste the wax you scooped out. It is still full of wonderful scent. Pop it in your tart burner and burn it until the scent is gone.
Q. I cut the wicks so short and I can’t light the candle at all.
A. This is a rare occurrence but if you are unable to light the candle because you cut the wicks too short, gently dig around the wick with a wick dipper, butter knife or back end of a spoon.
Light the candle and tilt the jar side to side allowing the wax to roll to the sides away from the wicks. Allow the flame to become high enough to get the candle burning nicely. Be sure to always allow the candle to burn evenly across the top before you extinguish the candle.
*Note: The wicks will burn the wax is beside them not the wax above.
This is why it is important to allow any candle to liquefy across the top before you blow it out. You should not have “steps” in any candle (showing every time you burned it) if there is wax clinging to the jar above the flame (tunneling). Remember heat rises, the flame will simply melt the wax above and run down into the melt pool and drown out the wicks or continue to tunnel.
Please follow candle manufactures directions to avoid this happening with any candle from any manufacture.
Tips for Tarts
Place Wax Tart in the top of a dry potpourri burner / Tart Burner and never add water. Light an unscented tea light under the Tart Burner. When melted, the wax potpourri will release its wonderful fragrance. You can also mix different fragrances together to create your own unique blend of aromas. Offers up to 12 hours of fragrancing each Spotted Hog Candle Tart.
Votives
For all votives, Burn in a votive container, this will make your votive last as long as possible and prevent damage to your furniture. Wick mushrooming or slight smoking is the candle telling you the wick needs to be trimmed. It is recommended you maintain the wick to the length of ¼ inch..

Q. What does triple scented mean?
A. Triple scenting is using 3 times more fragrance in a candle than is typically used by others.
Q. In other jar candles the wax is hard, why is this wax soft and creamy?
A. Our wax is a mixture of vegetable and paraffin wax; we created this cream blend to produce a wax that would allow a more strongly scented finished candle. With our candle wax, the fragrance molecules bind to the wax much better than the hard waxes and are easily released during burning making a very fragrant candle. Another benefit of our wax is it produces a much longer burning candle and because of its soft consistency, when you reach the very bottom of the candle the last ½ inch, you can actually scoop the wax out with a spoon and use that small remainder in your tart burner. You really get to use every last drop!
Q. How come when I take the lid off my candle it does not smell as strong as what I anticipated, but when I burn the candle it smells really strong?
A. This is actually a good thing .Our candles do not sit on shelves for months before you purchase them. We hand pour your candles when you place an order, our candles are packaged a few hours after the candle finished and is sent right out to you.
Most of the time you are receiving a candle from us that is only a few days old. This hardly enough time for the scent to accumulate under the lid compared a candle that has been sitting on a shelve for 3 or more months. At The Spotted Hog Candle we thoroughly mix our fragrances within the wax .This assures that the fragrance is captured within the very structure of the candle and releases the fragrance while burning the candle when the wax liquefies.
Q. Why is there a thin metal wire in the center of the wick?
A. Here at the Spotted Hog Candle Co. we use either EPA approved zinc
Cored wicks or Cotton wicks in our candles. We DO NOT under any circumstances use lead wicks in any candle that we make.
The metal wire in the center of the wick is Zinc; we use The Zinc in the center of the wick because it solves quite a few common problems
First, it helps the wick to remain standing straight and centered while the candle is lit, preventing an uneven or crooked burn.
Second, it prevents the wick from falling over and drowning in the melted pool of wax .This way you are ensured that you will not be left with a candle that you can not relight. Last but not least, how many of us have accidentally broken the wick off too short while trying to light a candle? The zinc in the center will not break too short ,you can trim your wick to the precise length with out the risk of breaking too much off .We recommend that you trim the wicks before you light it with scissors ,wick trimmers or nail clippers will work too.
Q .Why do candles from other company’s burn right down the middle rather then all the way across the top and even like yours do?
A. It’s really hard to say, Sometimes it’s a poorly made candle, Sometimes its not proper candle care or burning i.e., blowing the candle out before it’s melted to the edge. When burning a candle you should always let it burn all the way out to the edge. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside and will prevent your candle from forming a "canyon" in the center. Burning a candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you burn the candle it will "remember" to burn to its edge.
Q. Why after a couple of hours of burning do certain candles seem to lose their fragrance?
A. Most likely only the top surface of the candle was scented! At The Spotted Hog Candle Co. the entire wax batch is blended with our highly concentrated fragrance oils and color. This assures even and constant fragrance discharge throughout the life of the candle.
