Other Facts
These are mostly off the back of his baseball cards

*Long Coveted by the A's, Ted finally was traded to Oakland on July 6, 2003 in a three team, seven player deal involving the Yankees and Tigers
*Ted works better with his team's backup catcher
*If there was any doubt that Ted's fearlessness is a key to his success, consider this amazing statistic: In his career, he has been on the mound for 111 at bats by opponents' cleanup hitters, but has surrendered only 19 hits to them-- a .171 batting average. In 2002, Lilly held all batters he faced with runners in scoring position to a .174 mark.
*Armed with an exceptional curve, a low 90s four seam heater, and an effective changeup, Lilly blossomed in 2002 with a 3.40 ERA in 16 games with the Yankees before being dealt to the A's. On April 27 (2002), he allowed one hit and fanned eight in eight innings against the Mariners.
*Ted's first six starts in pinstripes, from April 22 to May 27, 2001, resulted in Yankee victories.
*The Yankees entered 2001 with four aces--- Mussina, Clemens, Hernandez, and Pettitte. The fifth spot, however, was up for grabs. After two pitchers failed to secure the spot, the Yanks recalled Ted Lilly from Columbus (AAA) on April 22. Lilly started that afternoon against the rival Red Sox, fanning 10 in a 4-3 Yankees win.
*In Ted's best 1999 performance, he allowed just three hits over seven scoreless innings, striking out eight batters, to pick up the win for Ottawa (AAA) vs Syracuse on September 5.
*Lilly mixes a hard slider and a curveball with a good fastball. A starter for much of 2001, he is expected to compete for a job in a crowded rotation.
*On April 22, 2001 against the Red Sox, Lilly, then a Yankee, became the first pinstriper to fan 10 batters in his debut since Charles Hudson in 1987. A finesse pitcher with a fine changeup and curve, Lilly was acquired from the Yankees on July 5, 2002.
*Lilly only posted a 3-6 record with New York in 2002, but that was due more to a lack of run support than through any fault of his own. The A's liked what they saw from the young lefty and traded for him at the midpoint of the season. In his Oakland debut (7/15/02) Lilly held the Devil Rays scoreless and wound up earning the victory.
*The A's strengthened an already impressive rotation by adding Lilly to the mix halfway through 2002. The southpaw demonstrated flashes of brilliance during the season, including a three hit shutout against San Diego on 6/22/02.
*Lilly was called up to the Yankees on 4/21/01 to fill in as a spot starter. In his first start in New York, only the fourth of his major league career (three with Montreal in 1999), Lilly pitched 6.2 innings against the tough Boston Red Sox and fanned 10. This made him the first pitcher to strike out 10 or more batters in his first start as a Yankee since Charles Hudson in 1987. That season, Lilly also finished second in strikeouts among rookies to CC Sabathia (170). The 2002 season was bright for Lilly as well, as he took a no-hitter into the ninth against Seattle on 4/27/02. In spite of his strikeout totals, Lilly is considered to be a finesse pitcher wtih a fine curveball in changeup. He now plays for the Oakland Athletics.
*Produced from the Dodgers in 1998..... Set Ottawa (AAA) record with 13 K in only 7 IP on August 21..... was 1997 California League (A) pitcher fo the Year with a 2.81 ERA, 158 K, 134.2 IP, including a no-hitter. Skills: Standard fastball-curve-changeup pitch array, all thrown to spots. Average velocity but great live, uses curve as a knockout pitch. Up Close: Has stuff that was likened to Tom Glavine by Fredi Gonzalez, a rival manager in AAA last year.
*Made MLB Debut in 1999..... picked to 1998 Texas League (A) all star team..... fanned Ottawa (AAA) record 13 batters in one start that year...... California League (A) Most Valuable Pitcher in 1997.... Led loop with a 2.81 ERA..... fired first nine inning no hitter in league in three years. Skills: Lives on his sweeping curveball, effortless arm action...... spots 89-90 MPH fastball away. Up Close: Only pitcher in California League History to earn Pitcher of the Week honors four times in one season.
*The Los Angeles Dodgers' 23rd round pick in the 1996 June draft. Led all short season minor league pitchers last season with a 0.84 ERA.
*A 23rd round pick in 1996, Lilly and his fastball dominated the Northwest League in his pro debut with an 0.84 ERA at Yakima, as batters hit just .135 against him. He picked up where he left off in 1997, including a no-hitter in May to win California League Pitcher of the Year honors.
