Week Four (Days 22-28)
DEVELOPMENT OF THE PUPPIES

+ Begin to eat food
+ Begin to bark, wag tails, bite, paw, bare teeth, growl and chase
+ Use legs well
+ Tire easily
+ Depth perception starts

Day 22
1/25/2005

The pups barley fit in the Rubbermaid tub, and are starting to crawl out while I clean up the whelping box!

The pups are wormed for the second time

Mark and I make sure we pick the pups up frequently. Turning them over, holding them, touching their feet. Getting them used to being handled.

Day 23
1/26/2005

The pups are more active now. They start play biting each other. Growling and barking.

They can hear and see a lot better, noticing people that come near the welping box. I play a radio in the background, and sometimes have the TV on near the box. (Beauty likes Animal Planet)

Day 24
1/27/2005

Day 25
1/28/2005

Beauty and Aysa take a break to play in the snow. We have been hitting temps of 26 below zero! They don't stay out long!

Day 26
1/29/2005

Morning pictures

About 4:00pm I introduced puppy mush for the first time

The pups did real well with it. I have to separate Beauty from them while they eat, or she would just go in the box and eat their food and let them nurse from her. After they eat what they want, I do let Beauty in to clean up the rest. This is always messy!

The puppy mush I used today is one part condensed milk, some plain yogurt, a scoop of digestive enzymes, and gerber rice baby cereal. You can use goats milk, commercial milk substitute, weaning formulas. There are a lot of home made puppy weaning recipes.

News from the Curly world. Today Jet's half brother Curlew BIS BISS CH Riverwatch Southern Cross went Best In Show! There have been 6 other Best in Show curlies in the past. Only two were owner handled Best in show (as opposed to those that were shown with a pro handler) Curlew is however the first curly to go Breeder Owner Handled to Best In Show. That is a huge thrill. Congratulations to B/O/H Mary Meek. And Congratulations to his co-owners, Conrad &Ann Clippert.
The first curly to go BIS was Curlew and Jet's great-great grandfather, Ch. Summerwind's Charles Dickens CD WC TDI

Day 27
1/30/2005

This morning the pups go in the shark cage for breakfast, while I clean and change the whelping box.

Day 28
1/31/2005

Early morning with Beauty

In the shark cage for second breakfast

The pups are wormed for the 3rd time today. I had to get weights before giving them the worming med. The smallest pups are just over 4 1/2 lbs, and the largest are just over 5 lbs.

Go to week 5

(Puppy evaluations are done on day 49. That is 2/21/2005. The pups will be ready to go anytime after that.)
