Why we are doing this litter, and why we are doing this litter at SoftMaple?

You may have noticed that Beauty is a bitch that I bred here at SoftMaple, but she currently lives at Gunflint curlies. This will be Beauty's first litter. When a bitch has a first litter, you never know what to expect. Will she be a good mom? Will she be able to deliver naturally? Will she have enough milk? Most curly bitches are great moms. There are a few that need C-sections. There are a few that don't have natural instincts that kick in, and some that don't produce enough milk. These are all things to worry about with any litter. Having a litter isn't just putting two dogs together, and waiting 63 days to let nature run its course. That isn't fair to the bitch, or the breed. I am an ex Vet tech, Registered Nurse, who can take the time off when I have a litter. I know that not everyone can take a few weeks off to be with a bitch when she deliveries. Not everyone can supplemental feed a litter if needed. If everything goes right, and that is most of the time...then I just have that time to stare at the new mom taking care of her babies. :-) Given that, it was felt that for Beauty's first litter, everyone would feel more comfortable if she had them here. So that's why Beauty is coming back to SoftMaple for the litter.

Now, why Beauty and Maestro? Well, this breeding goes back a few years. In 1997 I saw a picture of a 6 month old liver curly that I just loved. I contacted his owner, who sent me pictures of him on a regular basis. The dog lived in The Netherlands. After he grew up, had his health clearances, I decided to take the plunge and breed a bitch to him. In 1999, I had my y International litter. The liver girl I kept was the one that most reminded me of her father. Once she grew up, had her CH, and health clearances, I choose to breed her to a male out of the litter of mine that had the most field drive. In that litter, there are 3 personal hunting companions, 4 Junior Hunters, and the breeds first Master Hunter with an AKC Championship. This was the combination I was looking for to bring the type I got from the overseas Caballus dog, and the field drive, movement and attitude I got from Jet's litter.

At that time, A dog from the same Kennel in Finland that Inferno was born in, came to the USA. He was only here a short time. He was young, and did not at that time have his health clearances. The fact that my International kids were too closely related in pedigree to him, and he was juvenile patterned, kept me from breeding to him. Now, you heard me right. Juvenile patterned. I won't name names, but there are some awesome curlies out there that were also juvenile patterned, and with the other health issues (epilepsy, cardiac problems, hips, etc...) I won't let juvenile patterning stop me from breeding to a dog, its just one of the many pieces that have to be taken into the whole picture when you look at a breeding. His coat looks great now that he has matured. Once he returned to Finland, he also got his health clearances. (Hips B Eyes clear 20.02.04) While he was in the US, he was bred to one bitch. A litter by Dese curlies, out of CH Boyerie's Sweet Liberty CR-CA137/65F/C-PI CR-583 CR-531G27F-T . Libby is out of Am & Can Ch. Boyerie's Andouille O'Wits' End CR-449 CR-264G24M, who is a male that at one time I tried to breed to, but because of the shipping embargo's to Georgia in the summer, I was unable to do the breeding......so.... I already liked the bitches side. Now the father's side was far enough removed in pedigree to consider. Its one thing to bring in bloodlines from overseas, but if you then dilute them with whatever you have in the US, you eventually loose what you brought in. So the only way to Fix or Set a trait or type, is to breed back to that line. With breeding a Caballus granddaughter to a Caballus son, it will loosely line breed back into what I brought in in the first place.

I am doing this litter for selfish reasons. I want a pup. Beauty's co-owners will also take a pup. I am not breeding to populate the world with curly pups. The way the pups are raised, nurtured and cared for means a lot to me. I utilize the AKC's limited registration policy. I don't want this breed to fall into the hands of puppy millers, and back yard breeders. I don't condone any curly breeder who is breeding. I just hope they all do genetic testing, place companion animals on limited registration with spay and neuter agreements. This is a small breed. But we don't need more puppies out there. We need a few more good representatives of the breed, with some diversity in bloodline. I am not saying this litter will produce anything breathtaking! These are living animals, and there are no guarantees on anything. You breed the best to the best, and hope for the best! And take responsibility for what happens either way.

Now, physical reasons I chose the two.

Beauty is a good size bitch. At one time I had contacted Dese about leasing Libby.... she was smaller boned. Behind her pedigree are nicely balanced dogs, that are not huge. Andre was a real nice dog within the standard. His son, BIS Ch. Kurly Kreek Marshall Dillon Boyerie WC, CGC, TDI, is a nicely balanced dog, but is not as big as I personally like a male curly. He has a great attitude, nice angulation, good coat, good pigment.

Libby's grandma, CH El Mack's Della Street CR-350 CR-316G32F, was also a CCRCA National BOB winner. She again, isn't a real large bitch.

Behind Beauty, you have Tempest, BISS CH Ptarmigan Gail At Riverwatch CD WC CGC TT TDI National BOB 93,97,98,99 CR-EL10-T CR-336F28F-T, CERF, who was just an all around great dog. She had over 100 group placements. But was much, much more. A great curly ambassador, who never showed a bad side, and had a ton of field drive.

Another great dog behind Beauty, is Teddy. Teddy was a multi group placer who won first AKC recognized CCR National Specialty (1994) Teddy is the sire of the first female curly coated retriever in the breed's history to reach the title of Master Hunter and 2nd Master Hunter over all in the breed. He is behind Jet and Jade, and many other curlies who just love to hunt.

BISS Ch. Ptarmigan Walk The Wild Side BOB 94 National CR-339G26M-T, CERF

Behind Beauty, you also have Bumper. CH Mathel Felicitation ROM CR-CA3/38F/C CR-453G24F CERF. Bumper is mom of the all time most winning curly Rebel. Rebel is a 4 time Best in Show curly. Bumper is mom of my international litter. Out of that litter 8 finished their AKC Championships. Seger, who is Beauty's mom, earned a 4 pt major, and back to back 5 pt majors her first show weekend at just a few days over 6 months old. Her sister finished her CH going Best of Winners at the National Specialty.

So getting back to type...and why we did this litter. Beauty has some big, graceful moving, ground covering, birdy dogs behind her. She also has some very European typy dogs behind her. Maestro has some nice compact curlies behind him. He also has those nice typy European curlies on his dad's side.

I rely on word of mouth, on hands inspection of dogs, and lots of photographs. Talking to breeders and owners. Studying pedigrees. Weighing the pros and cons of a breeding. The rest is in the dog-god's hands. (or paws) I don't breed to the current winner. That would be too easy, and not the best thing for my bitch. Im sure my breeding choices don't match other breeders choices. There are litters happening out there right now that I cringe when I see the pedigrees. I don't breed to become more popular with other curly breeders. I breed to produce what I think will be a great addition to the curly world. That dog may never make it off the couch, never win a ribbon, never make ESPN retriever trials.... but if that dog lives a good long live, and win's over his owners. Then I have done good. ;-)

So we are breeding SoftMaple Gunflint's Beauty CR-715G28F-NOPI, CR-EL131F28-NOPI, CR-CA157/28F/P-NOPI and CH Boyerie Dese Maestro Music Please CR-CA148/24M/C-PI-ECHO CR-696G24M-PI CR-750, and I will hopefully have a new curly bundle in January called SoftMaple's Beautiful Music.
