New York Yankees Team Report

Yankees give it another shot

With the disappointing loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth inning of the seventh game of last years World Series, the Yankees have a new look this year. First off, the Yankees signed the American League's best hitter of the past few years, Jason Giambi. Giambi hit .342 last season with 38 home-runs and 120 RBI's. Though Giambi may not bring the defense that Tino Martinez did, his hitting should more than make up for it.

The Yankees also aquired OF Rondell White. This will be a great pick-up for the Yankees if White stays healthy, though he has been injury prone in the past and has already suffered an injury this spring. White hit .306 with 17 home-runs in just 95 games last season.

OF/DH John VanderWal should prove to be a decent pick-up. VanderWal has the ablity to deliver clutch pinch-hit at-bats at any time which should be valuable. John had 3 home-runs and knocked in 20 runs in just 139 times to the plate.

The Yankees aquired the aging Robin Ventura from the New York Mets for OF David Justice in the off-season. Ventura will fill the empty spot at third base left by retired Scott Brosius. Ventura hit .232 with 24 home-runs and 84 RBI's last season.

New-comer Steve Karsay and familar-face David Wells are the main additions to the pitching staff. Wells went 5-7 with a 4.50 ERA with the White Sox last year. Karsay had 8 saves split between Atlanta and Cleveland last year.

Projected Starting Lineup
SSDerek Jeter
LFRondell White
1BJason Giambi
CFBernie Williams
CJorge Posada
RFShane Spencer
DHNick Johnson
3BRobin Ventura
2BAlfonso Soriano

With no real weak spots the Yankees will be tough to beat. Expect to see John VanderWal getting some starting time if White is hurt or playing DH in place of Nick Johnson.

Projected Pitching Rotation
Roger Clemens
Mike Mussina
Andy Pettitte
David Wells
Orlando Hernandez/Sterling Hitchcock

The Yankees top three will be tough to beat. If David Wells is on top of his game he could make a huge difference on this Yankees team. Expect "El Duquee" Orlando Hernandez to be traded before the season starts.
