Nursing informatics! What is it all about?  Hi!  My name is Sharma Santamaria; I am a graduate student at Molloy College majoring in nursing administration and informatics. I developed this website to share my clinical  experience at the MMC MIS department and more.

Nurses are frontrunners in the new restructuring of the healthcare system. Of course the nurses’ functions are evolving and highly specialized. However, at the advent of the information technology in healthcare, nurses again have to redefine their professional roles and functions, and these are guided and supported by ANIA, NYSNA, and ANA. The healthcare system is now facing multiple changes in search of quality of patient care, safe patient care, and in an effort to control the recent $1.7 trillion cost of healthcare.

Hebda et al.(2005) defined the nurse informatics' functions which include the following activities: theory development, analysis of information needs, selection of computer systems, design of computer systems and customizations, testing of computer systems, education of users on information policies, evaluation of the effectiveness of computer systems, ongoing maintenance and enhancements, and identification of computer technologies that can benefit the nursing profession and compliance with regulatory requirements for information handling and project management.
