General Energy Production in North America

COAL

According to the Energy International Administration (EIA) in their International Energy Annual 2003 report, Mexico produced 11 million short tons, Canada contributed 68 million short tons and the United States produced 1,069 million shot tons of coal. North America’s total production was approximately 1,149 million short tons of coal.

OIL

In 2003, according to the EIA’s International Energy 2003 report, Canada produced approximately 3,110 thousand barrels per day of crude oil. Mexico managed 3,797 thousand barrels per day while the United States produced 8,797 thousand barrels per day. North America’s total came to approximately 15,704 thousand barrels of crude oil produced per day.

NATURAL GAS

Explained by the EIA in their International Energy report, in 2002, Mexico had a gross production of 1,334 billion-cubic feet of natural gas, while Canada produced 7,786 billion cubic feet. The United States contributed 23,941 billion cubic feet, meaning North America had a gross production total of 33,060 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

ELECTRICITY

According to the International Energy Annual 2003 report performed by the EIA, Mexico produced 209 billion kilowatthours. Canada was a far second with 566 billion kilowatthours while the United States produced 3,891 billion kilowatthours. The total electricity production of North America in 2003 came to 4,668.11 billion kilowatthours.
NUCLEAR
The United States is the world's largest supplier of commercial nuclear power. As of 2005, there are 104 U.S. nuclear plant licensed to operate. Together, they provide about 20 percent of the Nation's electricity.

General Energy Production in Europe

In general, energy production in Europe has increased over the recent decades. The main increase was with the crude oil production. This large increase more than compensated for the decrease in coal production that occurred. Of the proven nonrenewable reserves, Europe has only 0.6% of the world’s oil, 19.5% of the world’s coal and 2.0% of the world’s natural gas. These reserve percentages are different than the actual production percentages. For instance, in the case of coal or natural gas, the production compared to world production is higher than the reserves compared to world reserves.

COAL

The coal productions of the European Union contribute 12% of the World’s resources. Of the European countries, Germany and Poland produce around two-thirds of the production.

OIL

The European Union accounts for about 4.5% of the World’s oil production. The United Kingdom alone accounts for nearly 80% of the European Union productions.

NATURAL GAS

Europe is not a major producer of natural gas. The European Union produces about 9% of the World’s resources. RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources      The European Union has many renewable sources of energy, which include wind, solar, hydro, biomass and among others. Europe maintains the position of most advanced in wind production with capacity of up to 28,452 MW. The solar production is now increasing and reaching 14,010,400 m2. Europe’s hydro production adds up to about 10,734 MW. Forms of biomass include wood and biogas. The European Union is using wood as a renewable source replacement for fossil fuels. Wood is actually the major renewable sector of energy in Europe at about 43 millions of toe. Europe is also increasing their biogas production, which is accomplishing two tasks, reducing pollution and producing energy, and it is producing about 3,219 thousands of toe.
