Paris Peace Treaty 1783

 

France didn’t react as strongly to America’s separate peace as it provided an opportunity to avoid their promise to Spain

 

Terms:

 

America gained independence

 

Great Britain kept Canada

 

Shared access to the Great Lakes

 

Western boundary was the Mississippi River

 

31st parallel was boundary on southern border with Spain (without Spain’s approval)

 

Americans retained fishing rights in Newfoundland and Gulf of St. Lawerence

 

All nations were to respect pre-Revolution debts

 

States would be “encouraged” to give Loyalists back their rights and property

 

Americans and British would have navigation rights on Mississippi )again without Spain’s approval)
