    Social improvements through government action

    Improve life in a modern, industrial, urban, ethnically diverse society

    Limit the power of big business

    Improve democracy

    Strengthening social justice

         narrowing the gap between rich and poor

         reducing violent labor-management conflict

         remedy racism and Jim Crowism

         increased rights for women including suffrage

    Elimination of corruption in government

    Efficiency and practicality
