The North:

 

Controlled more than 2/3rds of the states

            19 free states

            4  slaveholding border states

            Northwestern portion of Virginia

 

 

Population of 22 million as opposed to 9 million in the South, 3.5 million of which were slaves

 

 

90 percent of the nation’s industry was in the north, south relied heavily on imported manufactured goods

 

 

The north had 20,000 miles of railroads, more than twice that of the south

 

 

Over 75 percent of the nations finances were located in the north, south had trouble financing the war

 

 

North controlled the navy and merchant marine

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The South:

 

Consisted of a geographically tight group of 11 states with some areas of pro-Union sentiment

 

 

South could fight a defensive war with shorter lines and knowledge of the terrain

 

 

South held the loyalty of the best military leaders of the time, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson

 

 

Southerners were more accustomed to the outdoor life of riding and hunting which preapred them better for the life of a soldier

 

 

Southerners had support of foreign nations such as Britain and France who they assumed would intervene to help them (because of their supply of cotton)
