Domestic Policy of Eisenhower

 

Beliefs:

     lower taxes

     reduce government regulation of the

           economy

     restore separation of powers between

           Congress and Presidency  

 

Advocated "modern Republicanism":

     middle of the road approach

     conservative with money, liberal with

           human beings

     acceptance of basic New Deal reforms:

           expanded social security

           raised minimum wage

           extend reciprocal tariff program

     limit federal power:

           expand power of the states

                offshore drilling rights given over to

                states

           encourage private enterprise:

                flexible supports to farmers (in

                hopes of ending them)

               

           ended price controls from Korean War

                era

           reduce expentitures and balancing the

                budget by ending state run

                projects by replacing them with

                private ones 

 

Illnesses:

     heart attack, intestinal obstruction, and

           mild stroke

     led to the adoption of 25th amendment in

           1967

 

Civil Rights:

     Brown V. Board Decision 1954

     sent army to Little Rock Arkansas to

           enforce integration of schools

 

Space:

     increased appropriations for space

           program

     established National Aeronautics and

           Space Administration (NASA)

     National Defense Education Act  (improve

           science and math education)

Other:

     Landrum Griffith Labor-Management Act:

           increase democracy in Labor Unions

     Statehood for Alaska and Hawaii
