Amendments to the Constitution:

11th Amendment

states cannot be sued in federal court by

a citizen of another state or a foriegn

country (1798)

12th Amendment

electors shall cast separate ballots for

President and vice President (1804)

13th Amendment

Outlaws slavery (1865)

14th Amendment

Anyone born or naturalized in the US is a

citizen

No state shall abridge citizens rights

without due process of law

No state shall deny "equal protection of

the laws"

Any state denying citizens voting rights

will have Represenatives reduced in

proportion

Leading Confederates are disqualified

from holding public office

Confederate debt is voided (1868)

 

15th Amendment

Right to vote cannot be denied based on

"race, color, or previous condition of

servitude" (1870)

16th Amendment

Congress has the power to tax incomes

(federal income tax) (1913)

17th Amendment

Direct election of Senators by the people

(not the state legislatures) (1913)

18th Amendment

Prohibition of manufacture, sale or

transport of alcoholic beverages (1919)

19th Amendment

Right to vote cannot be denied based on

sex (1920)

20th Amendment

Congressional sessions now meet

beginning January 3 (instead of the

following December), and the President

takes office on January 20 (instead of

March 4) (1933)

21st Amendment

Repeals the 18th Amendment

22nd Amendment

No president can be elected to more than

2 terms

23rd Amendment

Residents in D.C. have the right to vote

for president, and electoral vote can be

no greater than the least populous state

(currently 3) (1961)

24th Amendment

No poll tax can be required to vote (1964)

25th Amendment

Presidential succession and appointment

of vice-President (1967)

26th Amendment

Right to vote to 18 year olds (1971)

27th Amendment

Sitting Congress cannot raise its own

pay, until after next election (1992)
