US refused to join League of Nations

 

1921 Washington Naval Conference

5 Power Treaty: (US, GB, FR, It, Japan)

Naval powers agreed to ratio limits on their navies

4 Power Treaty: (US, FR, GB, Japan)

       Agreed to respect territory in the Pacific

9 Power Treaty:

Agreed to respect Open Door in China

 

Why would the US be interested in the Pacific and Naval disarmament?

 

Kellogg-Briand Pact 1928:

Nations renounced aggression as a way of achieving national goals

   

What kind of wars would be permitted? How could you enforce this?

 

US investment in Latin America doubled in the 20’s

 

Fordney-McCumber Tariff 1922:

    Increased rates by 25%

 

How would this impact foreign trade? American businesses?

 

US demanded that France/Britain pay back all war debts
