Construction

Ship models are constructed from high quality model kits containing blueprints made from researched historical archives, salvages and/or existing relics. Model Shipway's Charles W. Morgan for example, are based on plans for the 1983 restoration, provided by Mystic Seaport.

Usually the ships are double plank-on-bulkhead construction. I upgrade all single plank-on-bulkhead models to double plank-on-bulkhead to make a sturdier and better looking hull. Fine hardwoods such as African walnut, South American mahogany, boxwood, Spanish cedar, ebony and other specialty woods are used throughout construction. Metal fittings are brass and copper. Other ornamentation are bronzed cast metal.

Sails are hand and machine sewn. All painting is done by hand including hull detailing, deck fixtures, crew miniatures, etc. Rigging and ropes are wound following the direction used by the boatyards of yesteryear - these are small details, but make a big difference to the final model. Cannons, lanterns, ships wheels and even fire buckets are true representations of the originals.

Because each model is personally handcrafted, it takes between 200 and 900 hours to complete one perfect vessel. Results are museum quality ship models to be proudly owned and displayed.
