What Should I Tell
My Child?

The referral process is a difficult time for you and your child. It is important that your child understand that he or she is not stupid and that you are trying to find out where he needs help. Stress that you are not annoyed with your child, and let him know that you and his teachers are looking for a way that will help him to be successful in school. Also, your child may hear some terms like "learning disabled." Try to explain that this does not mean that there is something wrong with your child, but that it means that he learns differently. Be honest on an age-appropriate level and let your child know what services he is allowed to have.
