Mariah Carey Adding Some New Charms To Her Bracelet
05.23.2003 2:53 PM EDT
It looks like there's still some more charm to be squeezed out of Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet.

Her latest album, which dropped in December, will be reissued this summer with four new tracks. The popular duet with Busta Rhymes "I Know What You Want," which originally appeared on Rhymes' It Ain't Safe No More, will be among the bonus cuts.

Carey also recorded a remix of "The One" with Jermaine Dupri and Bone Crusher, which might be included. And, according to her label, two more new songs will be added, though they haven't been confirmed yet.

Coinciding with the re-release of the album, Carey will kick off a tour that will include picks from fans — or "lambs," as she calls them — who can vote for their favorite 20 songs on her Web site.

The new Charmbracelet, with revised cover art, is tentatively due July 29.

Mariah Ditching 'Bells And Whistles' On Tour
Although Mariah Carey is downsizing her North American tour plans from arenas to theaters, her agent tells Billboard the move had nothing to do with lower-than-expected ticket sales. "Mariah had been speaking to people, monitoring her Web site, and listening to her fans, and the resounding note she heard was her fans wanted to see her in a more intimate environment and were less concerned about the big production aspects of an arena tour," says John Marx, senior VP of contemporary music at the William Morris Agency.

Beginning June 21 in Seoul, South Korea, the 47-date Charmbracelet world tour, Carey's first in more than three years, was to be her most extensive yet. The North American leg was initially scheduled to begin July 18 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska, and conclude Sept. 23 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H.; international dates appear to be unchanged.

Marx maintains the tour would have been fine as booked. "Ticket counts were not that bad, and our average capacity on this tour was about 11,000," he says. "She'll have the same band, minus the bells and whistles. She's going to bring it back to what Mariah's all about: the music."

According to Marx, Carey could wind up playing as many as 27 dates, beginning July 26 at Celine Dion's Colosseum showroom at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. As previously reported, Island/Monarc is planning to reissue Carey's latest album, "Charmbracelet," on July 29 with four new tracks.

Only four North American shows had gone on sale when plans began to change: Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. (July 26), United Center in Chicago (July 29), Air Canada Centre in Toronto (Aug. 7), and the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester. Carey's official Web site advised her fans in cities where the shows had gone on sale to hang on to tickets and receipts, presumably for a refund or exchange. But some building officials were out of the loop.

Brian Miller, director of event development for the Xcel Energy Center, says he sold about 2,000 tickets out of the box. But when Billboard contacted him earlier this week, he had yet to be informed that the tour was being scaled back and that his date would be scratched. "Sounds like I need to call the promoter," Miller says. "We're still up and on sale." Carey was not only supposed to perform July 26 at Xcel, she also had the building booked for rehearsals July 24-25.

Robert Hunter, senior VP/GM of the 20,000-seat Air Canada Centre, says sales were at about 4,500 for his show, and the date was still on. It will likely take place in the building's 8,500-seat configuration concert bowl.

New Mariah Interview
Superstar Mariah Carey takes time out to talk to us about her world tour ‘Charm Bracelet ‘and her two UK tour dates.
Q: Hi Mariah how you doing? Now tell me all about your world tour, your Charm Bracelet World Tour - you must be very, very excited?

A: I’m very, very excited. I’m really, really looking forward to getting out there and touring and getting out there being with the fans. The whole vibe is going to be more intimate. I think the fans are going to feel really up close and personal with me and it takes a lot of discipline because I have to rest between shows, but it’s cool.

Q: Now tell us about the two UK dates
NEC Arena Birmingham and Wembley London (October 28 and 29)

Q: Tell us what it’s like playing at Wembley have you been there before?
Yes I have and I loved it – it’s fun. I remember I kicked a soccer ball there! Football you guys call it.

Q: This is your first tour in three yeas you’ve taken a long break from this kind of thing – you’re obviously fit and healthy to go back into it – how’s all that been going?
Everything's great everything’s been fine. It’s funny when people keep asking me how are you, how are you doing, are you feeling well and blah blah, it’s interesting to me - the press really like to hang on to an old story don’t they?

Q: But I saw you recently a couple of months ago you’re obviously on top form - what sort of things have you got in store for the fans at the gigs?
Oh thank you, well I’ve been trying to stay in shape doing these water aerobics which is kind of my new take on working out because it doesn’t feel like it - if you have to torture yourself you might as well do it in the ocean! But in terms of the surprises for the fans, I’m still working that out myself but I like to incorporate the different cultures of where I’m going - I like to bring fans on stage. This is going to be a lot more theatrical than my standard tour because I’ve had the chance to work with the people, the lighting people and had chance to be a lot more hands on.

Originally Reviewed: May 31, 2003

With the imminent relaunch of Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet and a high-profile tour just around the corner, it's more important than ever for Island/ Def Jam to deliver a radio hit for their pricey diva. Her cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" opens—like most of the album—with Carey's delicate upper register leading the way, but fortunately, this reworked single version strips in a new midsection, where Ms. M flexes some real vocal muscle. Ballads are few and far between on mainstream radio, and without the requisite add-on rap from any number of hip-hop stars, it's tough to score a gimmick-free hit. Even so, this is the most satisfying release from Carey in years: It's melodic, it's all her, and at last, she's singing like she means it. This is one "Heartbreak" we'll all be feeling.—CT

Happy Birthday Mariah Daily!
Today, 'Mariah Daily' celebrates 5 happy years online! Regina started the site 5 years ago which was called "WildtCatHG's Too Cool Mariah Page" and later transformed into Mariah Daily. Other than Regina, the site had great contributors such as Danielle, Nacho & Dis. I'm happy to be currently running it and thought I'd take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been supporting the site - sending news, sharing your opinions and above all visiting the site and supporting Mariah.

While I'm at it, I want to also apologize for the lack of updates recently due to the fact one of my Hard Drives died containing 30GB of data :( (NEVER trust computers) and a big Math exam coming up in 10 days (yuck!). I'll try to get back on track ASAP.

Thanks for the support & Much Mariah Love,
Liron.

Mariah Interviewed On UK's GMTV
Early morning viewers would have been greeted with a pretty sight this morning as Mariah Carey herself gave an interview- talking about the world tour, water aerobics and boys!

Before the Q&S was screened, Rachel Harrison (the interviewer) was asked what Mariah was really like. Was she a diva? Was she difficult? The answer- NO! Rachel Harrison, known for her quality entertainment pieces, said Mariah turned up five minutes early, apologised for being late, came with only three people and only requested some coffee!

Then, Lorraine Kelly, who famously criticised Mariah Carey, admitted that Mariah looked stunning in the video of IKWYW, and said it appeared Mariah was "getting her act together, which was pretty good!"

Of the world tour, Mariah said she would miss her dogs, and that whilst the state of the world is worrisome, a reality of her life is that she performs for her fans around the world.

After being told she always looked stunning by the interviewer, Mariah modestly said "I don't think I look good all the time but thank you, that's very nice of you". She then revealed that her new form of work-out is water aerobics, and she finds it annoying when she goes to places where the main dish is Fish and Chips and she's dying to eat it! "It's cool, you just have to take everything in moderation," she finished!

When asked if there was a special man in her life, Mariah said "I'm not in love. I don't even meet anybody. How can I meet anybody? All I do is sit on tv and do interviews! (Laughs hysterically) I'm gonna make it a prerequisite for you guys to bring a cute guy along with you!"

When asked about the diva rumours, Mariah said: "Sometimes there is a big entourage, but I don't think that makes me anymore special than anyone else, or anymore difficult"

Check out some captures from the interview in Gallery 7 (Thanks Will!)

More Mariah Vs. Eminem
Click To Enlarge Em's a girl blasts Mariah
MARIAH CAREY has blasted tough-talking rapper EMINEM as “a little girl” for threatening to use her voice messages on a record.

Em claims to have slushy words that Mariah left on his phone when they dated last year and says he will sample them on a single.

But Mariah hit back: “I don’t think he should do that because it will get him in a bit of trouble with my lawyers.

“If he is thinking of using a voicemail I left a year ago it is crazy.

“It feels like he is engaging in a catfight with me. It’s like dealing with a girlfriend in seventh grade.

“It’s like fighting with a little girl. It’s childish.”

Mariah, who features on BUSTA RHYMES’ new single I Know What You Want, called me to announce two UK gigs. She will perform at Birmingham NEC on October 28 and Wembley on October 30.

Tickets go on sale on May 30. Watch this space for more dates.

Em and Mariah were only an item for a short time and she has admitted it was never a match made in heaven.

Now she is hoping to find a British boyfriend when she tours. Mariah told me: “I never meet people. I want somebody cute, like a sportsman. Perhaps you can hook me up with somebody.”

Looking at the picture, it’s hard to imagine why she has trouble attracting a new bloke.

IKWYW Released In The UK
Busta Rhymes
'I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT (FEAT MARIAH CAREY AND THE FLIPMODE SQUAD)'
Released on Mon 26 May 2003
Label: J Records

Out of potential disaster Busta Rhymes is managing to forge some kind of success in the singles department. Last album 'It Ain't Safe No More...' was hardly a classic and yet you'll still find this track and the superb preceding single, 'Make It Clap' (especially the Sean Paul version), doing the business in your local hip hop discotheque.

The presence of Mariah Carey should warn off the hardcore (though it's hard to figure out quite what she's doing here) but casual MTV Base glancers will be in heaven from the very first bars of sun-drenched latin guitar lite. This is, you imagine, what a new Santana single would sound like if these two J Records players ever get the inevitable collaboration together.

As it is, the A&R department know the global reach of this kind of summer holiday material and it seems they have another hit on their hands.

mariah quotes
"People look at sensationalized stuff from last year, and they see that piece of my life and think, 'Oh, it's been a rough year,' but really, my entire life hasn't been a fairytale. Singing, making music, and writing songs has been something that has carried me through the rain or whatever situation I'd been through as a little girl." - Mariah on Oprah (Thanks Omri)
