idols (aka 'false gods')

Sabbath, 12/25/09, 06:09 PM EST USA (edited: 12/26/09, 8:28 AM)

Psalm: 115:1-8

1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us
      but to your name be the glory,
      because of your love and faithfulness.

2 Why do the nations say,
      "Where is their God?"

3 Our God is in heaven;
      he does whatever pleases him.

4 But their idols are silver and gold,
      made by the hands of men.

5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
        eyes, but they cannot see;

6 they have ears, but cannot hear,
        noses, but they cannot smell;

7 they have hands, but cannot feel,
        feet, but they cannot walk;
        nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

8 Those who make them will be like them,
      and so will all who trust in them.

9 O house of Israel, trust in the LORD—
      he is their help and shield.

10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD—
      he is their help and shield.

11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD—
      he is their help and shield.

12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us:
      He will bless the house of Israel,
      he will bless the house of Aaron,

13 he will bless those who fear the LORD—
      small and great alike.

14 May the LORD make you increase,
      both you and your children.

15 May you be blessed by the LORD,
      the Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD,
      but the earth he has given to man.

17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,
      those who go down to silence;

18 it is we who extol the LORD,
      both now and forevermore.
      Praise the LORD. [a] 9 O house of Israel, trust in the LORD—
      he is their help and shield.

Clearly a description of material statues which are made in the image of man.

Psalm 135:1-21

1 Praise the LORD.
      Praise the name of the LORD;
      praise him, you servants of the LORD,

2 you who minister in the house of the LORD,
      in the courts of the house of our God.

3 Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
      sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant.

4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own,
      Israel to be his treasured possession.

5 I know that the LORD is great,
      that our Lord is greater than all gods.

6 The LORD does whatever pleases him,
      in the heavens and on the earth,
      in the seas and all their depths.

7 He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
      he sends lightning with the rain
      and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
      the firstborn of men and animals.

9 He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt,
      against Pharaoh and all his servants.

10 He struck down many nations
      and killed mighty kings-

11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
      Og king of Bashan
      and all the kings of Canaan-

12 and he gave their land as an inheritance,
      an inheritance to his people Israel.

13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever,
      your renown, O LORD, through all generations.

14 For the LORD will vindicate his people
      and have compassion on his servants.

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
      made by the hands of men.

16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
      eyes, but they cannot see;

17 they have ears, but cannot hear,
      nor is there breath in their mouths.

18 Those who make them will be like them,
      and so will all who trust in them.

19 O house of Israel, praise the LORD;
      O house of Aaron, praise the LORD;

20 O house of Levi, praise the LORD;
      you who fear him, praise the LORD.

21 Praise be to the LORD from Zion,
      to him who dwells in Jerusalem.
      Praise the LORD.

The same theme with a reminder to obey God.

Ezekiel 12:1
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.

And so the final point of this page. Indeed, even people who have religion are as "gods" (we are told in the NT to treat people as "gods" of the world) so that the analogy is abundantly clear. They have ears, eyes, and a mouth, but they do not speak the Word of God.

Psalm 82

A psalm of Asaph.

1 God presides in the great assembly;
      he gives judgment among the "gods":

2 "How long will you [a] defend the unjust
      and show partiality to the wicked?
      Selah

3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
      maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and needy;
      deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

5 "They know nothing, they understand nothing.
      They walk about in darkness;
      all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 "I said, 'You are "gods";
      you are all sons of the Most High.'

7 But you will die like mere men;
      you will fall like every other ruler."

8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
      for all the nations are your inheritance.

John 10:22-39

22 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade. 24 The Jews gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."

25 Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"

33 "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? 35 If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken — 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? 37 Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. 38 But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father." 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

May God bless you to know His word - to have ears that hear; eyes that see; and a mouth that speaks His Holy Word, in Jesus' name, amen.

All glory to God!
