gentile

It suddenly occurred to me that the enemies of Israel are called "gentiles" in the Old Testament. Then also in the New Testament "gentiles" is used to refer to those who are not Chrisitan. So I want to set the record straight.

I knew that it must be a reference to non-believers - for Israel it was all those non-Israel; and for Chrisitians it must be referring to all those who do not accept Christ as Lord. But this seemed contrived so I still wanted to check.

gentile 3. Archaic. A pagan or heathen.

Nehemiah 5:9
So I continued, "What you are doing is not right. Shouldn't you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?

So indeed the meaning as used by God in the OT and by Christ in the NT are one and the same - it stands for those who are not elected by God for His Salvation. (The modern meaning is that it refers to Christians. But this is not important since only what it meant when it was used is important.)

All glory to God!
